Things you don't see any more

What's Hot

I was watching an old 70s Dr Who episode yesterday and I saw one of these engineer tents. It occurred to me that I hadn't seen oner in probably decades in person, although they were everywhere in the 70s.

What other common sights have gone?

    White dog poo.

    Firemen cleaning the drains.

    Bobbies on the beat.

    Empty Sunday streets.

One of the things I like about visiting France is how quiet it is on Sunday. Most of the shops are shut, certainly not open later than lunchtime, and lorries can’t use the roads unless they are carrying livestock or perishable goods ( you see huge amounts of lorries sat at service stations all day Sunday). Not something I thought I’d appreciate but I do ( well, unless I’ve run out of milk).

one of the things I like about the UK (being German originally) is that not everything shuts down on a Sunday and you can get things done you wouldn't have time for during the week ...

The thing I don't see in my area anymore is workmen at roadworks, there are loads of coned off roadworks around here but the workmen are never to be seen! It took nearly 6-8 months for our local roundabout to be repaired/renewed, I drove through it at least twice a week and didn't see a single workman in all that time but it still eventually got done.
Tomorrow will be a good day.

streets full of kids playing. Christmas morning used to be full of kids on our street, probably the only time you’d see a kid on as new bike wearing a snorkel and mask and a cowboy outfit.

That’s probably because in a health and safety gone mad UK its now deemed unsafe to work in the rain.

    Polo Fruits

Funny enough I saw Polo fruits yesterday. I don't buy sweets but I was in a newsagent yesterday buying a drink, I glanced down at the counter and saw a pink polo packet. Wondering what it was I stuck the glasses on and it said Polo Fruits.

    Road sweepers.

Milkmen (at least round here), eggmen, potato men (people who delovered potatoes, not the kiddies' face-making thing)

    Spangles

    Sweet cigarettes

A&BC football cards with tasteless gum

    Cola powder

Red telephone boxes ... not one left in my town. In fact there aren't any telephone boxes.

Milkmen driving those electric milk floats - the clank of bottles. None left where I live.

Good old pub that serves drinks with a pool table, a jukebox and a dart board - all the pubs where I live are gentrified gastropubs. The few old boozers that weren't big enough were closed and sold as houses or knocked down.

The old British cafe ... tea, bacon sarnie or full English. The last one near me closed a few years ago. We have 20 (I've counted them) coffee shops .. no bacon sarnies and most are as quiet as a library as people spend all their time staring at a mobile device while sipping a skinny latte.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

  • There's a traditional red telephone box in the Dorset village where I live. And another few not that far away. I think they keep them around here because they are picturesque.

People working on their cars at the weekend.

Funnily enough in this weather I see a lot of people fettling their cars - mostly older people who've retired and have a classic car in the garage. Nothing exotic but there are some MGs, Triumph Stags and Spitfire's, Jags, Capri's and a 2CV .. :-) There are a few classic car clubs around here ..

We have loads of cafes around here. Last time I was in one it was full of van drivers on their mobiles going ‘ I’m on my way but just stuck in traffic at the moment’ before munching a bacon sandwich.
My mother still has her milk delivered by a milkman, although I don’t think I’ve ever seen him. Fairly sure I’ve never seen one where I live.
