Absolutely fascinating watching this early footage. I think Nirvana changed everything for me when I was 10/11 years old. I instantly realised I like my music loud, dirty, punk, heavy but still with the hooks.

  • My mate has just messaged me and our bandmate, from Seattle saying he jogged up to Kurt's house this morning listening to In Utero and just as he got to the top of the hill, All Apologies finished and the sun came up.

I'll be watching that show later tonight, looks good and I've not seen much (or any) footage with Jason in the band.

They may not have been anything special in many ways, certainly in comparison to those that inspired them (in their own opinion as well as mine and others), but they opened doors to acts inspired by them, those who inspired them and their peers.

With the music market different now (streaming and downloads as well as discs), and the fact that I'm so much older (and squarer too), it's hard to see something like this happening again.

  • This is another great recording of the early years. Imagine going to see an unknown trio from Seattle in a random dive bar in a small town in central Austria, and they go on to change the face of popular music within 2 years...

Can a phenomenon happen like this with 20-somethings via YouTube?

    No....I very much doubt it.

I haven't seen anything like this happen with such a raw band for many years. The last band I can remember tearing through the press etc was At The Drive-In.

Sure, there have been indie bands who have become huge, like Arctic Monkeys/Libertines, but they are nowhere near this raw.

Artic Monkeys aren't a bad example but their rise was so quick by comparison to Nirvana or ATDI.

Bands don't seem to go through the sample development slog anymore, honing their craft and learning to write songs etc.

I'll just stop that there because I realise what I'm beginning to sound like!

It gives me a warm glow to see that Krist is still wearing my band's t-shirt at this show. He loved that shirt. :)

Never heard them do Jesus Wants Me For A Sunbeam other than on Unplugged: that's freaking awesome.

Is there any footage of the Nirvana/Cateran shows kicking around?

Sadly not. At least not that I know. That would be something, though.

It's cos stuff happens in bubbles now. It was different when there were only a few TV channels etc

You're definitely in the minority if you think they were nothing special

Thanks, I've seen a lot of early Nirvana on youtube but haven't seen that one before. Reading 91 is one of my favourites:

Nevermind came out 1 month after this.

Don't get me wrong. I thought they were brilliant!

The point I am trying to make is that those who came to their music were often turned on to the music that inspired them.

Its not Dave Grohls kit, thats Chad Channing. I dont know about thew tom angles though. They were definitely something special, many many months before the release of Nevermind everyone into that kind fo thing knew they were going to be massive. I saw them at both the Reading Festivals they played - the buzz around them at Reading 1991 was quite unlike anything I'd known before

  • Chad played North drums throughout his time with Nirvana. They shells made from are fibreglass and a have horn shaped bottom head to aid better projection towards the audience. They look f*cking weird and I bet the cases were massive, making them a total pain in the arse to load into the van!
