Rehearsals been going regularly for about 2 months now.  4-piece: female vocalist (strong voice, good range), bass, drums, guitar.  Here are the songs we have been working on so far:

  1. Blondie - Maria
  2. Blondie - Sunday Girl
  3. Blondie - One Way Or Another - segue in to ...
  4. The Undertones - Teenage Kicks (and back to One Way Or Another)
  5. Tina Turner - River Deep, Mountain High
  6. Tina Turner - Proud Mary
  7. Eliza Doolittle - Pack Up
  8. Pixie Lott - Mama Do
  9. Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called Love segue in to ... Rock 'n' Roll medley of
  10. Buddy Holly -  Oh Boy, Elvis - Blue Suede Shoes, Danny & Juniors - At The Hop
  11. Bon Jovi - Livin’ On A Prayer
  12. Gabriella Cilmi - Sweet About Me
  13. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
  14. Phil Collins - You Can’t Hurry Love
  15. The Noisettes - Never Forget You
  16. Stevie Wonder - Part Time Lover
  17. David Guetta - Titanium
  18. Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody
  19. The Beatles medley - Can't Buy Me Love, I Saw Her Standing There, Twist & Shout

We probably need a handful more songs.  And we need to put them into some kind of order ... two set lists for pub / club gigs etc. I'm aware that it is a slightly mixed bunch of songs. The overall theme we want is to have songs that are upbeat, up-tempo, energetic, danceable etc.

Any suggestions for great songs suitable to female vocals to fit right in very welcome.

And, any suggestions for picking out set-openers / closers / encores very welcome too.

Many thanks.

Nothing to add re songs suitable for a female vocalist, but having 50+ tracks 'in your back pocket' is very handy to mix it up if gigging in a local area on a regular basis. Pull 'em out, pop 'em in, as you may be playing to the same punters in a different venue the next day/week.

Good list thus far tho! I'd go for a listen and a pint.

Thanks for suggestions and @jd0272 for having a pint with us.

    @Polarityman .. don't know the Cardigans.

Female vocal songs with upbeat feel are what we need.

We know the 'classics' but are not exactly with it on modern stuff.

I'd do mostly stuff by The Selecter, although keys would be ideal.
Stuff like 3 minute hero ( and every covers band needs one ska song as its dance music for blokes).

Katie Perrie?( spll?) If you dig out the earlier live versions from Later and that period she was basically fronting a new wave ish rock band.

Walking on sunshine - Katrina and the waves. A bi of a standard but seems well liked by the punters/girls/dancers.

I actually played this at the start of our last rehearsal ... no bad vibes so may be worth a push ... the guitar, nice arpeggiated intro chords going in to funky strumming is great ... and the violin solo I've transcribed ... just at a slow speed right now

We have a female vocalist and these all go down well. We've mixed songs between those that were originally a female vocalist and those that weren't....we tend to pick songs that can be rocked up a little, or are uptempo and danceable. We start off with rock n roll to help warm up, but also to get toes tapping early on. Its unlikely that people will dance much in the first set, but it gives an idea of what's coming. This is the setlist from our last gig:

    1. Don't Stop
    2. Twist and Shout
    3. Honky Tonk Woman
    4. Satisfaction
    5. Run To You
    6. All Day & All of the Night
    7. You Really Got Me
    8. C’Mon Everybody
    9. Great Balls of Fire
    10. GYOW
    11. Call Me
    12. Waking Up
    13. Gimme All Your Lovin
    14. Sharp Dressed Man
    15. Can't Get Enough
    16. Ever Fallen in Love
    17. Rock n Roll Train
    18. Crash
    HALF TIME BAR BREAK
    1. Are you Gonna Go My Way
    2. All the Small Things
    3. Hush
    4. Stuck in the Middle
    5. Echo Beach
    6. Thorn in My Side
    7. Brimful of Asha
    8. Play that Funky Music
    9. I Love Rock n Roll
    10. Doctor Doctor
    11. Song2
    12. Take Me Out
    13. Place Your Hands
    14. Sweet Home Alabama
    15. Rebel Yell
    16. Johnny B Goode
    17. Livin’ on a Prayer
    18. Sweet Child
    19. Sex is on Fire
    20. Summer of 69
    21. 500 Miles

    @hubobulous

    wow
that is a set list ... loads of songs

    thanks all for suggestions

we're going to try ... soon
    Elton John - Crocodile Rock
Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth
Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In The Dark

Not so keen on Cardigans etc, not quite upbeat / dancy / recognisable enough to us oldies

we haven't yet split them in to a Set 1 & Set 2 yet ... any suggestions?

All the old girl groups/soloists - Supremes, Shirelles, Aretha, Roberta Flack, Martha Reeves, Etta James etc - could be given a modern treatment
Imagine something sharp and witty here ......

  • We do about 5 tracks by The Detroit Cobras - basically, rocky/trashy covers of classic girl group/soloist songs from the 60s. Worth checking out...

    Thanks all
Love all that old motown, soul, doo-wop ....
thanks for introducing me to Detroit Cobras - never heard them
careful selection of single voiced songs is key as we only have the one vocalist ... drummer does some backing vox, but limited
