Howard Goodall's Story of Music ~ ~ ~ in 6 parts

What's Hot

I found this series very enlightening, and it gave me more that a little feeling of deja vu.
Somehow most of this stuff we think we have discovered has been done before.
I am just glad I wasn't told that as a rebellious 15 year old.     :)

    Other resources:

As these are on YouTube there is a possibility that they may become unavailable over time.
If any of these stop working, can you let me know please, maybe by PM, and I will try to fix them, as I think they are a good learning resource, it would be good to keep them available for all.
(note: I have already had to find a work-around for part 3, thanks Auntie Beeb)

Well that wasn't as straight forward as it should be.  Part 3 is no longer available, so I have had to do a work around, so it is split into two parts now.  One downside to using YouTube, but at least these wonderful learning resources are out there.  Do let me know if any of the links stop working and I will do my best to remedy that.

So - Part 3. The Age of Elegance is now available above.

Thanks @JAYJO, I am glad you found it interesting, it is always nice to get feedback, cheers   :)
I found it gave a good perspective on music in general, and I also enjoyed the journey he takes you on.

  • And now for a little rebellion

  • The very last part, left me wondering - what's next ?
So much of what we think of as new ideas have been done before.
There seems little progress, or anything truly "new" for a couple of decades.
Maybe societies heart is not in music, with so many other distractions, it is not the rebellious heartland of youth anymore.
It does seem to me a very thin facade of shallow gratifications and entertainment is all society seems to crave nowadays.
I would love to be wrong about that.

    Last part:

  • I bought the book to the Big Bang series and it's excellent.

He's a really clever, knowledgable bloke, and appears to be a decent one, too. I wrote a letter to him about the Big Bang series and book and he was very gracious in his reply. (Don't ask me what I said, it was nearly 15 years ago, and I can barely remember 15 minutes ago these days.)

Maybe something to watch on a dull May Bank Holiday ?

I am working my way through watching it again, this will be the third time, a year apart.  I amazes me that I always learn something new, as well as reinforcing what I (almost) learned the last time around.  I guess that a year passing, along with writing, learning and practicing etc, gives a new perspective.  As with so many things in life.
