Great idea for a thread - have a Wisdom :)

I'll keep my own counsel for the minute: mainly owing to the fact that it'll make me appear old (albeit younger than the good Rocker, above).

Tom Morello is the last person who profoundly changed the way people play guitar.

I was tempted to say Matt Bellamy, but I'm not sure he has been as influential.

I suppose you could also say the guys from Korn who popularised the 7 string thing, but I've never been a fan.

Ta, I'll hold back mine, even though it's someone that I am not a fan of.

  • Matt Bellamy for the soundscapes maybe?
At least he can use a tuner, unlike Hendrix...

Bellamy and Morello were the two names that jumped into my head.

  • Probably the one who last inspired legions of teenagers to start playing guitar.

Annoyingly, that would most likely be Slash.

I disagree, although you may still be annoyed: Noel.

You've had Cobain and Noel Gallagher since then who despite what you may think of their playing made a lot of people buy guitars.

For a short time, yes - however, Slash is still inspiring kids to learn to play worldwide, after nearly 30 years at it. Noel probably got more kids into it in the UK while Oasis was at its peak, but not really any more.

Ah, the no definitive conclusion at all thread!!!

Leo Kottke got my attention years ago tho. Anyone dead flash with an acoustic. And I don't even own one. Sigh.

Is that what makes a guitar hero, sales ? I can see Them getting kids to play again, similar to punk rock in 70's, but what guitar skills did they bring to change the way we think about playing etc

I was responding to @digitalscream my answers were further up the thread.

But I'm also going to throw in Joey Santiago and Jonny Greenwood.
