I know I always post this, but I don't think I've ever heard one which tops it.

  • My favourite cover varies all the time, but my current one is Imelda May's rockabilly version of "Tainted Love".

Just can't feel that that version does the original any justice (that may just be because it's my favourite song of all time, though)

    This, however...

The studio version has Al Anderson on the solos, I saw him live about ten years ago and he was truly wonderful. He used to be Paul Kossoff's flat mate and got the Bob Marley (and then the Peter Tosh) gig on Kossoff's suggestion.

  • John Martyn's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow": first of all for having the balls to try and cover it in the first place and secondly for doing something new with it - which is what a cover is all about, isn't it?

SikTh covering Nick Cave. A marriage that sounds as though it was forged in the fires of hell. God it's good.

Mikee Goodman is one of the best metal vocalists in history. A force of nature.

  • Better than the original, although the guitar is a little muddy in the chorus.

  • This is also amazing.

Fallon does an amazing Neil Young.

  • I've posted this before in other contexts but, for me, a cover that gets the balance between obvious respect of the original material and successful reinterpretation.

  • @fob I've posted the Country Roads one in another Discussion about a thousand years ago, it's brilliant. I've suggested it to my band but it turns out to be something of a Marmite thing.

I first heard Country Roads on one of my mum's Toots records; when I heard John Denver's version I initially assumed it was a rather pointless cover. Denver's studio release seems a little sterile to me but live versions are much better.
