Is there any way that the forum can be changed so that photos can be uploaded directly from devices?

I personally have no real issues using photobucket but some people very obviously do to begin with, and removing a middle man might be good?

Anyways, not nit picking, just merely a suggestion and as always, thanks to all involved with running my favourite (by miles I should add) forum on ye olde internet.

I'm guessing the reasoning is (a) disc space and (b) photobucket et al do a better job of photo hosting than a forum ever could ...

Yes probably, though it will put our hosting costs up a bit.

Ah fair play, minimal gain for cost is not really a good tactic in this scenario I'd imagine.

We have talked about it in the past.

  • You don't have to specifically use photobucket either. You can use any web space that you can host images on (including social networking). If you upload a photo to Facebook and then copy the image URL and set it on here, that works just as well. Remember you can make an album private (change its privacy settings to Only Me) and then upload away. That's what I do for situations like this. It's just easier, 'cos I can upload it straight to the album through the Facebook app on my iPhone. :)

  • It would be nice to just upload straight from the computer but it is not a mega deal to use photobucket.

I seem to remember when this forum started there was talk of using tapatalk.

    Is that still being considered?

It is such a regular occurrence that I have taken to copy and pasting in this (below) to help people out, largely newbies to the forum, I recon if you get them young then they will be self sufficient from here on in, and then also help others in the spirit of the community.
The Facebook bit on the end is courtesy of our own @Lukeage, thanks I didn't know that.

Pics are dead easy, use PhotoBucket, copy the direct link, paste into the 'comment box' on here, and the system software sorts it all out nicely.  Hope that helps.  GLWS.
(you may need to refresh your browser to see the pics BTW)
(Other web hosts work fine too see here for Facebook)

    Encourage good citizenship.
    Get that sorted, AND
    - lazy eBay link only ads,
    - actually show us what you are selling (pics),
    - prices (they are getting better),
    - "where the fuck are you" (location) which should be on everyone's profile page. Some say "collection only" but where the hell from?
    - proper descriptions (I honestly have no idea what some pieces of kit are sometimes, so why the hell would I want to buy it?)
    - And FFS have the courtesy to mark the TITLE of the add with SOLD or something when it is, and also leave the content for future reference.
You would think some folks just don't actually want to sell stuff...

Maybe all of this could be in a "welcome to theFretBoard" PM or something?

Is it just me who gets hacked off with this stuff?
And yes, I know the irony - people can't (be bothered to) read, and yet here they are on a text based forum !

Ha, nowt so queer as folk, I guess.
Off to have a coffee and lie down in a darkened room...
    [/rant]

    Cheers,
    Chris

If, at some time in the future, you're looking to change the hosting and maybe incorporate loading pics direct, etc., you could have a word with Gadge who runs the Eggle forum. He definitely does web hosting for a number of companies and individuals as well as his own sites and, as a fellow guitar nerd, he may be up for hosting the FB.

Sorry for coming in late on this. We do have storage capacity on the hosting for quite a bit - we're currently using between 10% and 20% of the available storage (approx. 100GB in total, including the server's operating system).

However, the reason for not enabling image uploads is that we had absolutely no clue as to how popular the forum would be and how much space the content would take up (as well as all the logs etc). Basically, it's a case of "suck it and see" to figure out whether we can handle the storage; in the next month or two, when I get some time to go through it, I'll have a good look at supply vs demand in terms of the available space, and we'll make a decision then.

Personally, I really do want to have image uploads. I just don't want to rush into it and then end up having to switch it off again because we've run out of space ;) We have to bear in mind that this is an absurdly popular forum for one which has only been going for 6 months...our traffic levels (40-50k hits and about 1,000 posts a day) are such that most forums who've been going for years would be envious, so we have to be careful and bear in mind the fact that the traffic is increasing all the time.

Can I just add again, thanks for such a fucking wicked website. BBC Sport and Facebook are feeling lonely without me these days!

I'd hope that we give those figures a bit of a boost with the Great British Guitar Show stand.

In fact, I'll tempt fate and say that if we don't find at least 100 extra signed-up members, I'll be disappointed.  That should be enough to increase the daily hit count to >50k rather than 40k-50k.

  • I suggest using Flickr over photobucket simply because photobucket compresses the crap out of images.

When using fb on my phone sometimes photos are embedded into the post and others are shown as links-thus requiring me to navigate away to view them, why is that?

I use Flickr, but my success rate is 1 in 3, this puts me off posting photos. This in turn means that I never remember how I did it on the odd occasion I was successful.

Kind of a self-fulfilling spiral, but I do get the whole storage issues.

Must practice posting photos more often

    :-S

Sounds like a Specialist Interest website, featuring slightly older ladies with colds.
