I lamented a while back that Chinese takeaways don't taste like they used to, BBQ ribs not in the same deep red sauce, sweet & sour sauce lacking pineapple chunk and carrot strips and too sweet, some chop suey lacking water chestnuts, pancake rolls only a 3rd the size they used to be etc,
Despite this nostalgia, I still enjoy a good chinese takeaway. I like beef chow mein with the lovely burnt tasting noodles, pork balls, crispy shredded beef, kung po chicken, yung chow fried rice among others!
What's your favourite dish?
PS guess what we're having for dinner?

Otherwise, we've given Chinese food a miss for years because it all went a bit meh where we are in London, for the same reasons made by the OP.
Hokkien Char Kway Teow for street food
Many years ago before I had ever been to a Chinese takeway or restaurant one of the Mums in the youth group I went to would make sweet and sour chicken. I loved it. So when I started going out with my now wife she suggested a restaurant in Stanmore. So I ordered my favourite, sweet and sour chicken. I got served with these chicken balls with the sauce between the chicken and batter. So I thought that this was proper sweet and sour.
So fast forward many years and I ordered sweet and sour hong kong style from my local takeaway. It's exactly as I remembered Mrs Ms homecooked version. So for years I thought she wasnt making it properly and I was a Philistine for liking it but it was the proper job.
I think most people are fine with it though, just some people get a reaction to it and of course that means the media go crazy over it.
It's rare I'll eat a Chinese or any takeaway these days.
