Wheeler Dealers new series

What's Hot
 Has anyone watched it?

Caught the new series tonight and I have to say I like the new mechanic Ant. Don't know anything about what he's done before but he seems quite similar to Edd in that he's quite affable and knows his stuff.
It must be a difficult show to take over because essentially Ant is the main guy, less Brewer and his " 'old out yer 'and" nonsense the better.

It’s Wheeler Dealer lite.  The original format was too thinky for the USA market.

Brewer irritates the hell out of me.  He’s like a cross between Chris from Family Guy, Tom from Tom & Jerry when he’s been flattened by an anvil and runs around as a disc with legs, and a Harry Potter goblin.  I always got the feeling that Edd looked upon him as an embarrassment to the show.  Oversimplifying everything as though he was talking to an audience of 8yr olds.

Bloody stupid programme anyway...  they never account for any labour charges in their profit calculations.  Edd seemingly works for nothing!

    I've set it to record.

Ant has been on some other shows, doing up high end cars and suchlike.

Brewere is like a geezer with a market stall.

The whole "make a profit" angle is baloney; buying a clunker and spending weeks doing it for a few hundred quid is not a real profit at all, especially if you factor in costs (premesis, power, equipment, ramp, welders, etc.). I think it was originally conceived as a guide to what an enthusiast might achieve in their garage, but with the use of pros that all goes out of the window.

My Lotus bloke wasn't impressed when I once mentioned the show; he said that on the episode where they did up an Elise, Ed was always bugging him for info.

I've always taken it for what it is, a bloke in a garage fixing a car. It's not highbrow tv, just something to watch for an hour before I go to bed.
The whole making a profit is utter bollocks obviously but I really don't care about that.

The last few series have included labour. Was always a bug bear of mine as well!

I started to change the channel before Brewer “sold” the car to whoever the production crew picked out of a crowd, at random. Decent programme if Mike would just fuck off

Really?  Ok.  However.... the last few series’ have also included Mike Brewer.  I far prefer Scrapheap Challenge or the one fronted by Suggs a while back.

Brewer is everyone's idea of a down-trodden, east London, slimeball, secondhand car-lot salesman or yesteryear.

Not that they're much better these days.

    Is it Ant Anstead?

    The whole programme is tosh.

They buy old "classics" and there is never much wrong with them that a little bit of TLC won't cure.

No engine/gearbox overhauls needed which would blow the budget.

Like all "reality" shows on TV the whole thing is completely staged.

^ Certainly the last few series when they moved to USA felt that way, but back in the day there were plenty of cars bought that had issues show up.
Ed said the reason he left was he felt it was being dumbed down - less focus on the mechanics and more cookie cutter Discovery "reality" fodder.

A mate of mine owns a couple of DeLoreans and saw how the whole schtick works when Wheeler Dealers did a program on one. A crew go out to the US and sort out the cars and prices in advance. Mike Brewer then goes out and films all the bits where he “buys” them.

The DL was then advertised on their owners club site, listing the condition and what work will be done to bring it up to decent spec. They then asked for bids on the car and agreed the sale, so the bit where the guy “buys” the car at a DL rally is all nonsense (surprise, surprise). Apparently the buyer wasn’t impressed with the quality of the bodywork on seeing the car and demanded some extra work, which is where the bodywork specialist they showed got involved...they edited that bit of film into the program afterwards.

Yeah ok, its all nonsense and Mike Brewer is a first class annoying twat. Their prices are way off what the average punter would pay too “a full leather interior to fit a classic Jag Mike? That’ll be £400 to you” “Old yer ‘and aht son. I jest got a right bargin!”  s

I still enjoy watching the program, but mostly for Edd’s spannering skills and seeing how things are done. Amazing how he always diagnoses the faults first time though! I’m sure they get lots of info off owners clubs and specialists beforehand.

A fun game to play whilst watching wheeler dealers is to have a look at the old MOT's online and see if the car is still on the road.

My cousin was on there once as a 'buyer' - goes without saying obviously staged.

Some time later they also asked if his wife would like to be on as a 'buyer' as the first person had bailed on them and they needed someone on there quickly.

Television is not full accurate and not real life shocker.

It's just entertainment. I've not watched the new one yet, got it recorded, but the program in general is loosely car-based fluff.

I liked Edd and I like Ant from his other shows so we'll see but I'm sure I probably still watch it.

    Edd got fucked over really.

He (rightly) said that the new US-friendly format was bobbins, and when they wanted him to do less techy stuff and dumb it down a bit, he walked away. He had hoped that Mike would back him up but they roped Ant in to replace Edd, leaving "the big man" without a gig.

Thing is, Edd China really knows his stuff and has been on the classic/retro/modded scene for years - I know Mike has been pretty unkind about him of late, but I'm a believer in Karma... I think Edd has a much longer shelf-life than a shouty bloke with a comedy cockney accent who used to sell used cars (and still owns some used car dealerships).
    Never Ever Bloody Anything Ever.

I have always felt very uncomfortable about programmes like this where they show in great detail, the haggling process at both ends with Mike Brewer rubbing his hands with glee at the way he screwed the seller and the eventual buyer. the seller and the buyer must surely watch the show and in some cases think, "you fackin' caant".

I do enjoy the show only from the aspect of the cars themselves but I think that Mike Brewer is the archetype used car dealer. You decide what I mean.
