It's scone not 'scon' alright!

What's Hot

Bloody google speach pronouncing scone as 'scon'.
As a born southerner with roots in Devon and Cornwall I can fundamentally state that the correct pronunciation is scone as in cone.
I tried to drill this into my antsy daughter as she kept playing back the google 'version' to me!

I don't know, bloody cosmopolitans corrupting the language.

Oh and by the way real scones don't have dried fruit in them! .. What are people thinking!

Hummpphh

While I agree entirely about the pronunciation, I think the important thing is to celebrate the scone and the cream tea at every available opportunity.

I have no horse in the raisin race.

I don't mind the dried fruit, its the cheese I don't like.

I suspect the further north you go the shorter the vowel becomes. I mind that a lot less than southerners putting an 'r' in words like bath path past where there isn't one! And I don't like hearing latte pronounced as lartay.

Scone rhymes with cone. End of.

Best taken with jam and clotted cream. Either first, although I think Her Majesty takes them with jam first, then cream on top. If that’s good enough for her, who am I to disagree?

There was some news last year where this was all settled.....

    .... oh yes, here: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/food-and-drink/news/survey-reveals-correct-way-to-pronounce-scone/

    It’s a scon.

Or do you have a hot choco - late, as opposed to a choco - early.

I may be a born and bred southerner too but I disagree with you on both the pronunciation and the fruit.
Sporky is entirely correct though, the most important thing in all this is to eat them as frequently as possible!

    Wait.

    Cream then jam?

    Or

Jam then cream and being wrong?

It's definitely a scone, if it was a scon, it wouldn't have an 'e' on the end of it.

Depends whether you're in Cornwall or not.

The rest of the country finds it hard to get upset about how someone else arranges their scone toppings.

This is why it's a jolly good idea to go to Cornwall on holiday, but an even better one to stop once you get to Devon.

Am a Londoner and have always pronounced it cone with an s on the front.

Unsure how the family in Brixham say it, but whenever I go, theres a gluten free place I can eat at that did some mean scones! Both cream n jam, just whack it all over n enjoy the hell out of it!!

Now my northerner friend on the other hand calls these types of food ‘bread cakes’. But shes said Scon before, I’m sure of it lol
