I'm not sure how to respond to the idea of the X6 being "quite the looker" without causing huge offence.

    ;)

For any sort of crisis/fun car I'd go convertible.

    SLK
    MX-5
    Alfa Spyder
    Z3
    TT
or for the ultimate in combination of crisis and ownership woes an old high mileage 911
    Red ones are better.

I have been looking at Evoras.

Why do they all have black wheels? Black wheels look awfully cheap to me.
A Lotus dealership would probably be happy to either swap wheels or have them painted for you?

I had Murray Lotus in Edinburgh paint the wheels on my first Elise black after a few months of ownership as I thought the silver wheels looked cheap!

I did wonder if they'd swap wheels. The local place does Morgan and Subaru as well and they're lovely.

late to the party here, but if I ever had the funds and need for a silly car, then I'd go for something really out there, like an old rolls silver cloud, or mebbe something silly like a Morrris Traveller.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

Now I can imagine you in a Morgan Sporks. Course you’d need a deerstalker, a cable knit jumper and a pipe but actually I imagine you’ve already got those. :)

Two out of three isn't bad. If Morgan did heated seats and air con then a Roadster would do nicely.

Not totally, but I think the risk profile may exceed my limits.

Current short list is A110, Signature XK, Evora or (probably not) Morgan Roadster.

I’m now imagining Sprocket sitting in the passenger seat of a Morgan, wearing a flying helmet, goggles and a scarf. C’mon, you know you want to.  ;)

With a 50k budget I’d be tempted with this:
    https://www.mcgrathmaserati.co.uk/cars-for-sale/maserati-quattroporte-seicilindri/

And 40k for when it breaks...

I do have a soft spot for that particularly ugly era of Maserati though.

How about a three wheeler? Fresh-air conditioned and not really appropriate for leaving at a train station of course...

    But there's this saucy minx...

Lady BMcH wasn't foursquare against the Morgan though...

Apart from being a firm believer that 2 seaters must be convertible, that Evora is rather stunning.

    Buy it! :-)

    It's OK on that count - it's a 2+2.

50k mid life crisis car would be either a Cayman S, a C63S, a Bullitt Mustang (possibly with an aftermarket Rousch supercharger) or a new M2 Competition. Left field option would be an RS4

40k would be spent on a C63, Standard Cayman, or standard Mustang GT. Outgoing M2 is good but a bit bouncy and not as special with the N55 engine rather than the S55 on the new one

I’m constantly window shopping for Porsche Cayman S. Won’t be buying one for a year though.

Tempted by a 996 Turbo. I think they”ll shoot up a lot in value in the next few years.

You could wait for the new Supra, that will probably be around your budget.
