My lot did a US tour about 12 years ago. Mostly played to empty-ish rooms, but was a cheap way to get 3 weeks in the USA and good practice as a band. When we got home we got loads of bookings as "just back from their US tour" made us sound bigger than we were...!
But at no point did we pretend we were already huge, and we certainly didn't spend multiple tens of thousands. And social media hadn't really been invented yet
I love Quixotic characters. If I'd had half an inkling about this I'd gladly have gone to Underworld. Alone

I know of a guy locally who did a similar thing in terms of the ‘heading to the US for gigs’, ‘just back from a US run of shows’, except he played up to it and liked to be a big fish in a very small pond. I was rather amused when it transpired he’d nipped over to play a few random singer-songwriter open mic nights.
As for this guy, he's got the media attention. If only his songs weren't rubbish he'd have a good shot at success
"that mix is drier than my nan's snatch"
"better than Nickelback"

The irony is that his ego massaging stunt has probably brought him enough attention that he'll end up with a real tour and the fame he clearly craves to go with it - albeit briefly.

IMO, I'd love to see a documentary about the guy directed by Burt Layton who made an excellent documentary by the name of 'The Imposter'
From the BBC article:
Only £780 quid to book the Underworld. We should do this jammers and tFB bands!
