This has just been announced on Instagram (and probably elsewhere).

Happy Christmas! I never expected another free update.

I can't find a link just yet, but I imagine one will come up soon.

"This free, user-installable update contains new effect types, new real-time control assignment and expansion of recording feature with stereo effects via USB.

More information will be announced soon.

The Katana Version 3 update will be available for KTN-50, KTN-100, KTN-100/212, KTN-HEAD, and KTN-Artist."

Awesome, I'll download it onto a CD and throw it in the skip on top of my dead amp.
    :)

I don't really know tbh, I sold it about nine months ago to a mate, a couple of weeks ago he just said "big smell, no worky" and binned it.

He hated it anyway tbh, and I sold it to him pretty cheaply.

I did pull the chassis out once to put a different speaker in it so I've seen what's in there, which is why I didn't offer to fix it for him.

It was looking really battered though the last time I saw it to be fair, so it's had a tough life.

Good news!  I hope "real time control assignment" has something to do with accessing the three slots in each effect type (which I would use) rather than something to do with expression pedals (which I never bother with)

In any case, great to see they're still updating this even after launching the NextOne thingy.
Some of the gear, some idea

  • I note the words … another FREE  update...

DO Amp manufacturers usually (ever?) charge for software?

Line 6 have add-on packs for POD HD gear that costs.

Not yet, but I do reckon it's a future we're headed for.

I don't think it will be the case, recently the tech industry has been moving to a more free update model, with the hope that you will buy their services, it's possible that Boss/Roland/(Insert other manufacturer here) will start charging a subscription for custom designed presets for artists or some other thing.

  • Hi - newbie here!   Well I'm really hoping they have either added tap tempo over  midi or the ability to assign a rear foots witch to tap tempo for the Katana Head. At the moment I'm using a  midi foot switch and the GA-FC and that's just daft.  I actually wrote to Boss a couple of times regarding this. Of course there is a danger any new update will lock down the amps and shut off the sneaky amp etc but I'm quite happy with the tones - its tap tempo options I need!

  • Well where is it?! Why promote an update that isn’t available? It’s nearly a month since they announced it.

That'd be pretty hilarious in the middle of a gig.

  • Just downloaded Katana V3 (not yet installed) but it doesn't look like they have added tap tempo over midi or over a footswitch.  Also the wah is still after the distortion... I despair - have Boss ever tried to use a Katana head live? To fully use it with out having to switch modes on the GA-FC I would need  to use a midi controller, a GA-FC and an external wah pedal! More pedals than using a pedal board. I might build a switch box to    choose between different external  pedal  settings for delay time but still a real pain in the butt.

It seems the update has removed the sneaky amps. Might be worth waiting to see how things pan out before updating.

    #honeymoonperiodover?

I was excited to try a Katana (50w combo) and thought it was awful.

You have to In my experience consider the K50 a bedroom low powered amp. That’s what it sounds best as. The more volume you introduce the more low end you loose and the more fizz creeps in. But on 0.5 watts it’s a great amp.

I don't get the whole obsession with the Katana honeymoon period.

Still got one, still thing it's a decent cheap amp.
