Maple fretboard refret - does the lacquer need to be removed?

What's Hot
Hi all,

I've got a Fender Custom Shop '53 tele that could do with a refret. Having never had to have a lacquered maple board refretted before, I've got a couple of stupid questions...
  1. Do you have to remove the lacquer/finish before refretting?
  2. When Fender are installing the frets initially, do they install the frets, then lacquer?
See... I told you they were stupid questions...

    1. Not necessarily - if the frets can be got out without ruining the lacquer then you do't need to strip
    2.Yes

If the clear coat overlaps the edges of the frets, it will be advisable to score the finish to minimise cracking when the fret wire is raised.

If the replacement wire is wider than the original, it should hide the join. You might get away with not needing to respray anything.

This is the kind of job where businesses like Feline Guitars easily justify their charges.
You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.
