We were dealers for Gibson, Fender et al. Needless to say that I had a big range of guitars to play with when I fancied a noodle and invariably I would always opt for one of the Gordon Smith GS1s to play with.
They were so light and responsive with a killer set up out of the box. The single pickup was incredibly powerful. It was a simple but perfect guitar that was 'the' most fun to play.
I'm not up to speed on the quality of their latest incarnations, but back then they were just really superb rock machines.
A kidney?
In a skint period, I sold the guitar. At the time, I regretted it. As my tastes in neck profiles changed, I would eventually have found the GS neck too skinny.
On the other hand, I have never heard a Gordon-Smith "in-house" pickup whose sounds I liked. This may tell you more about me than G-S.
My Gypsy is from 1990 and the headstocktransfer is no better than those I put on my Airfix when I was six. I believe the volume pot of the rhythm pickup never worked from I purchased the guitar in 91 (I rarely use it anyway) and there is visible wood-filler on the back (I think it's quirky as it could easily have just been painted black instead of tobacco sunburnt like the front).
Broken record: try before you buy if you can and save money by buying second hand.
