Isn't it the case that the Custom Shop just make what people ask for when they order one?

No, they have a set range of models each year that vary but they do also make special runs for dealers to their own specs and will also make one offs to a customers spec drawn up from the custom design guide.

I've looked at that site before but thought they were more examples.

Aren't the Custom Shop Strats sold at Guitar Guitar ones they've specced themselves and aren't available at other retailers, same with Andertons etc.?

The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

Some are but not all. The Ancho Pablo Strat and El Diablo Strat were both sold at those 2 dealers and was a standard model for a whole.

The Custom Shop stock you see in shops is pretty much all made to order. Yes, there is a catalogue and various limited collections each year but these are more of a showcase of what can be done. The vast majority of the instruments made are custom made to order.

This is not an official response.

Part 1 - The Custom Shop web site shows models that are part of the 2019 collection - Select signature models and a few special run/limited edition models -  All orders are placed by the dealer and we wait around 6 months for stock to arrive - Generally no custom options available on such models - You buy what Fender have spec'd

Part 2 - Fender will offer select Special Limited Runs from time to time - Generally via the NAMM show - Again the dealer will place an order and wait around 6 months for stock to arrive - Again we buy what Fender have spec'd - Such listings are very rarely listed on the Fender web site - There may well me 100 or so different models and colours offered as part of the NAMM Limited Run - Some are a Limited Run based on 1 of 10 or 1 of 100 etc - Others are part of a limited run, with an order book that is only available for the period of the show - As such maybe only 1 built or 55, depending on how many dealers order that exact model

Part 3 - Any Custom Shop dealer, be it me, GuitarGuitar, Coda, Peach etc, will order their 'own creations' - We spec them and order them and wait around 6 months for stock to arrive - Most stock is based on this link   http://www.fmicassets.com/sites/fender.com/themes/img/customshop/2018/2018_Custom_Shop_Design_Guide.pdf - Therefore we all have similar stock yet all different - For example I order a 63 Strat in fiesta red, Doug at Coda orders a 64 version in LP Blue - So more individuality about what each dealer has in stock

Part 4 - Similar to part 3 - But you as a customer can create your own CS model - Again around 6 months delivery - See above link again for a guide line of options

Note - Fender no longer carry any stock in any warehouse be it the UK, USA or EU - All stock is now built to order
