I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin
But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

My advice is get hold of this: http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Steps-Guitar-Fingerpicking-Demystifying/dp/0634050095
Its the best intro to fingerstyle I've seen and gives you the right foundation upon which you can start adding slide.
Interesting that you reference Son House and Booker White, as they were both fairly unorthodox from a finger-picking point of view. I've done extensive analysis on Booker's style in particular so if you have any specific questions about that, pm me.

This style is kind of my thing - I'm going to see if I can dig out some videos I did for a student a while back that have some exercises that could be useful for you.
So nice to see someone wanting to learn the proper stuff when it comes to slide.
Cheers Lewy. That would be great. You teach? Where are you? If this is the sort of stuff you do I would definitely be interested in some lessons, if you're anywhere near me. I love this stuff too. It's great isn't it

Fred McDowell - another fascinating player to study and another very interesting picking style. Bass notes played with the thumb but the index finger brushing up and down on the top strings rather than just picking upwards. Created a full, complex driving sound. You can see the same approach in the playing of his protégée RL Burnside.
Fred McDowell stylistically is probably my favourite. His style sounds more precise and developed than most of the others.
I'll wait to hear from you.
In the mean time I'll keep listening and practicing.
