He's been an alternative comedian so long that he's now mainstream. Just a few months older than me too!
No news yet on the cause of death.

I am deeply saddened by the news and send my deep sympathies to his family and friends.

Exactly this. I thought it was some reference / link to a comedy sketch.

I have been watching Rik Mayall comedies for over three quarters of my life. From Young Ones / Filthy Rich / Comic Strip / New Statesman / Bottom & those Rik Mayall presents in '93.

RIP Rik ('People's Poet').

I wonder if he'll kick the pearly gates open and say....'IIIIIITTSS ME!, HURRAY!!!!'

Well, I'm shocked by this. He defined what was funny for kids in the 80s - you had to watch The Young Ones or Blackadder or you were a "square".
