I remember when it came out in 1972 people referred to to "I saw the light" by Todd Rundgren as the perfect pop song.

If nothing else it's a remarkable record for the simple fact that there's only one performer credited.  And he was a mere 23 at the time.

I heard in an interview recently that he claims to have written it whilst stoned, it was his excuse for the "moon in june" lyrics.

IIRC it never even made the top twenty but how many great songs does that apply to.

I've also read he claimed he could knock up a Carole King-style song with very little work, and I Saw The Light was the result.

    Karate, by Babymetal.

    Manufactured band? Yup.
Ridiculous costumes in the video? Yup.
    Over-the-top choreography? Yup.
    Teamwork-beating-adversity theme? Yup.
Incomprehensible lyrics? Yup (possibly nope if you're Japanese, to be fair).

I really wanted to like McFly, since they’re a proper band who write and play their own material, not (as a lot of people assume) a put-together boy band... but I just couldn’t. I tried, but they were just too annoying.
    McFly were no Busted.

    Well it's quite the list.

I think Chained to the Rhythm is a very recent candidate.

Maybe we need to actually nominate by era, then shortlist the winners  :)

    Anyway....

Seeds of Love by Tears For Fears
Rio by Duran Duran, I didn't realise how brilliant this is until I listened to the podcast where each track was played in isolation.  The layers... The bass!
