The Cure - Friday I'm In Love (if that counts). Other than that it would have to be something by Michael Jackson, not sure which exactly there's a lot to choose from!

    Well it's quite the list.

I think Chained to the Rhythm is a very recent candidate.

Maybe we need to actually nominate by era, then shortlist the winners  :)

    Anyway....

Seeds of Love by Tears For Fears
Rio by Duran Duran, I didn't realise how brilliant this is until I listened to the podcast where each track was played in isolation.  The layers... The bass!

Yep...Rio....The Bass during the Sax solo is ace. So ace I don’t really hear the sax solo  :)

Agreed, that’s a really good song.

A bit too complex and clever to be ‘the perfect pop song’.

John Taylor is a hugely underrated bassist.

Ah, Be Bop Deluxe. Seen them a few times, and Bill Nelson is one of the favourite guitarists.

  • Spotify spat this song out at me on a random play list earlier today, and I thought of this discussion...

Surprised there haven't been more mentions of Motown stuff in general on this thread, with the exception of Jackson 5 stuff. Could probably nominate at least a dozen great tracks from the Motown heyday for this thread, an incredible output from one label!

Yup. Always felt they were held back by the name of the band, though.

Trivia - I was at a gig when Charlie Tumahi split his strides right round the crotch, and had to dash off stage. Rest of the band collapsed laughing, but to Charlie’s credit he returned wearing a shitty boiler suit borrowed from a janitor’s cupboard, and off they went again. I read that Charlie died some time ago.
