these dialects remind me of toddlers learning to speak...

    phrases like:

    'I wan Mash toe-toe'

    Amberlance

    Wing-scream wipers

    Chimleys

    Hambag

    lickstip

So users of these 'dialects' are all basically idiots who have the mental agility of a 2 year old

When such misunderstandings happen, it’s usually the native speakers who are to blame.

Rubbish. In the example in the article the person who didn't understand should have asked for clarification not just flipped a coin over two possible meetings. I worked in Denmark and the company language was English - it was drummed into people always seek clarification if you're unsure  and for native speakers write short concise sentences to remove any ambiguity.

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

Did a google and found more Tannoy history I didn't know:
The company moved production to Coatsbridge, Scotland. That could have left the company being English (did they move their registered address?), but in any case merged with Goodmans in 1987 to form TGI, which then got bought by TC International in 2002, so by rights they became a Danish company. Then MUSIC Tribe bought TC in 2015 ...

so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

he he ... did you ever see John Cleese in "The Selling Line" (a series of "motivational" programmes aimed at sales people). We had them on videotape in the Library when I was a student back in the late 70s.

Or Aberdeen, or Buckie, to pick the most extremely incomprehensible “english” I’ve ever heard. At least in Glasgae it’s basically only the accent you’ve got to worry about, not the dialect words, lune.

  • I freely admit I have a propensity or even a predilection for overly garrulous prose bordering on grandiloquence, and my recalcitrance to rephrase is often cited as obfuscation, however I think in this case the generalisation that we are the worst communicators is a classic post hoc ergo propter hoc extrapolation verging on floccinaucinihilipilification *gets coat*

  • On a more serious note, as much as I love etymology and speak a few languages, I was always taught if you can't express an idea clearly and succinctly you either don't understand it well enough or you feel you have something to prove.
