I order my veg and meat from a company whondelivers to my doorstep and uses local farms - therefore I support the local market but not buying from them directly (and mostly for their good quality organic food). Most of the non-food related products I buy online.

My friends have a coffee roasting business, their coffee is more expensive than the big brands but it's tastier than most and they've got kids to feed.

I live 12 minutes walk from the Fullers brewery so definitely local beer.  Normally stock up on preserves at some the local summer fairs/fetes.   There is a women who is always at the Ham summer fair who makes very nice Chilli pickle and lime pickle.

fair enough but I bet they're importing the beans

which is at least more ethical than importing the kids.

Same as most I think,  butchers, sometimes greengrocers and the local sausage shop (won best UK sausage on a number of occasions).  Summer months I use the local farm shops for stuff too.  Plus strawberry picking of course, although is it supporting local farmers if you eat three times what you pay for?

  • I'm spoilt for choice where I am, 2 local butchers, grocers, bakery, flowers, cake shops, locally reared meat, all available- veg is seasonal of course, but that's no bad thing. Also I can call the butcher in the afternoon and pop in at 7 on the way to work.

Our local Tesco employs 165 local people.
I'd rather support them than one local UKIP-supporting lunatic local butcher.

I tried buying guitar strings locally once. I was buying ten sets of EBs for £3.70 a pack mail order while my local shop was selling them for £6.75 a pack.

I said I'd give him £50 for ten sets because I'd rather buy local, which also meant I'd be popping in to pick them up from time to time, and doubtless browsing his guitar and amp stock at the same time.
He said no, so I have no need to set foot in there now.

I try to shop local. But there are so many miserable buggers behind the counter that I simply give up.

One my local builder yards treat me like a part time hobbyist DIY’er so I’ve stopped going in to them. This is regardless of the fact that I’ve made an effort to learn about the materials they stock, sizes and quantities. The last time I went on i asked them to order me a drill press.. I even produced cash to show them I was serious. They re directed me to Lidl..

Not sure what it is with the "trade" but I tihnk they feel they need to get one over on you because this is the only environment where it is possible for them to do so...

I've got butchers - hilarous in there like a a couple of characters from harry enfield sketch - bakers and grocers all within walking distance and use them 2-3 times a week!  I never used to because I guess it is easier to get all your stuff in packages with prices on, but I have now evolved from my shell all fresh stuff is sorced locally where poss.  If you've got community, use it or loose it
