a lot of the forecasts are compiled by, and using data from met offices on air force stations. we once were loading fuel and weapons to aircraft outside, (obviously) when we had lightning cracking down within about a mile of us, close enough!. someone rang the met office in ATC and asked them if they were aware!, they responded that they hadn't put the blinds up yet. needless to say a tannoy message soon followed that we were in a 'lightning state one' which meant we had to stop all such activities,. doesn't exactly fill you with confidence.
