Distressing things works perfectly well in plenty of other industries. Clothing, cars, furniture... even the red brick work in our house that I built the fireplace and wood storage I did next to it looks aged. Even though it was only built 3 years ago.

However with guitars, the gold standard is often considered a banged up one from the 50s.

As others have pointed out, whacky vinyls aside, nobody buys a brand new BMW and deliberately smashes it up to look like its been driven around for 50 years.
