Nah. All the ladies want to marry me. I have to keep my environment as unwelcoming as possible to keep all but the hardiest and most desperate away.

presumably YOU know how to get the warmth, she will know only how to turn up the thermostat to a number that makes her happy, while YOU still have control over how much heat is actually generated...

Erm, well actually the only way I know of getting the house hotter is to crank up the thermostat as well.

but if you have an OPERABLE thermostat hidden away somewhere like an under-the-stairs cupboard, and an INOPERABLE one where she can see it, then she can set hers how she likes and she'll be happy, while you have control over how much energy you spend money on (not an original tip, I think I've seen similar on this forum, bit it's a damn good idea)

Wow, that's a bit devious! Unfortunately a) I'm a rubbish liar so I'd probably tell her inadvertently (" Just off to adjust the secret thermostat darling!")  and b) my wife's pretty smart so she'd soon suss out that adjusting "her" thermostat wasn't actually doing anything.

(Can't work the bastard bus timetables out though, so it looks like taxi both ways. Grr).

Didn't take long to get back on the horse (she's not a horse is she?)

Got a belated birthday card from my godfather (one of my dad's oldest friends), and his wife, both of whom I've known my whole life and love dearly. This time though, it had an extra signature at the bottom - from the little five-year-old girl they've just adopted.
