Suede - Sky Arts

What's Hot

Brilliant documentary at the weekend - really enjoyed it.
Bernard Butler made a phenomenally good racket. Tough to replace but  Richard Oakes picked up the baton brilliantly and co-wrote some of their best songs.
And anyone who says the drugs don't work might reconsider when you see how well Brett's ageing.
Great band.

Likewise. Saw it last night and agree entirely. There’s a great Britpop book The Last Party which leaves you in no doubt just how influential Suede were in the early 90s

'Stay Together' is one of my favourite songs, it's so romantic. Along with the whole of the Coming Up album. Brilliant stuff.

As much as I love a number of Britpop bands (I grew up in the 90’s), Suede are a band I’ve never had much of an introduction to. This might be as good a way as any. Cheers for the heads up.

About ten years ago (or so) Butler and Anderson made an album together as The Tears. If you like Suede then give it a listen. It sounds very much like them. Big surprise that!

Suede fan here, have to check it out when I'm back in blighty.

Sky Arts showed a Suede gig in France a while back ... It was excellent.

I used to work at HMV head office and whenever a Suede/Tears/Anderson solo record came out, we'd stick it on and play "Brett Bingo"

    "She" - tick
    "Dog" - tick
    "The night" - tick
    "Stay" - tick
    "Car" - tick
    "high-rise" - tick
    "the stars" - tick

    etc. etc....

Good call. Love the riff in Brave New Century in particular.

  • One of my top ten bands EVER. That's a difficult list to get onto. Everyone in the band adds something unique.

Brilliant guitar work, amazing vocals, clever and interesting bass, tight as hell drums and some fantastic keys work.

They are also an amazing band live. Their recent trilogy of albums are just as good as their early work.

Do you show him how to play Wonderwall? That’d get his goat.

Just listened to The Wild Ones (Tune) and ticked most of these off.. :)

Dog Man Star is a great record imo even before you consider where they were in terms of talking to each other. I even like them with Richard Oakes too.. I'll have a watch.

Saw the documentary at the weekend and it was great. One of those bands that I wasn’t in to at the time but I really like them now.
Hadn’t heard of The Tears, will have to check that record out

Bernard Butler was a huge influence on me when I was learning to play in the 90s he’s a very distinctive player.

Absolutely, @Adam_MD it's slightly forgotten what a big deal they were, but I was bashing out punky chords a la Neds Atomic Dustbin before I heard Bernard. Then a whole world of chord melody embellishment and imcorporating open strings etc. opened up to me.

That led me back to Johnny Marr, who I was too young for first time round.

Is it a compliment to or a criticism of Richard Oakes that the band's sound remained so similar when he joined?

Not sure I know the answer to that. Both?

It was intentional. Oakes was a massive fan.

One of the reasons he got the job was that they were ready to tour and he already knew all the songs!

To be fair he is a fine player in his own right, just not quite as good as Bernard.

I know that. But shouldn't a great guitarist have their own distinctive sound?
