I don't know how anyone can say back to the future. The first film is brilliant, the second appalling (most contrived dogs dinner of a script ever), and the third merely bad. Should have left it as one all-time classic.

Nailed it in one @not_the_dj. Just the most perfect trilogy I've ever seen committed to film..the simplest of tales but so beautifully done.  

I also recommend Krzysztof Kieślowski's "Three Colours" trilogy Blue, White and Red.

Toy Stories 1,2 and 3 and the LOTR are favourites of mine too. 

The Riddick trilogy , not so good, the first film Pitch Black was awesome but the others  were 'so so'.

Like "Three Colours" it's made to be watched as a trilogy.

The Alien Quadrilogy, before they start to add in Premetheus.

I dont get the prometheus hate. All the alien films are about aethetic, theyre not hard sci-fi and i thought they got the aesthtic pretty well.

Okay no laughing...the dark knight trilogy. The third party might not be the best. But they are all solid films.

Also the godfather trilogy (godfather three isn't that bad!)

Had this chat before with a friend of mine, a good trilogy is rare.

Really big fan of (in no particular order)

• Back To the Future trilogy 
  
• Alien Trilogy+1 (No, I wont use that word! You can't make me!) I like to think of it as two film franchises though - one horror (Alien and Alien 3) and one action (Aliens and Alien Resurrection)
  
• Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
  
• Indiana Jones (not the last one - though not because of aliens in it... seriously a film about magic artifacts and good boxes and an alien was what upset people? When the CGI/effects were so very shitty and the acting was so very poor, people focus on the dead aliens being the problem...)
  
• Pirates of the Caribbean
  
• Die Hard
  
• Nolan Batman trilogy. 
  
• Dirty Harry and the western eastwood trilogy
• Lord Of the Rings (and soon I think The Hobbit)

The matrix was a brilliant film, but then had two utterly pointless sequels that were truely awful

Exactly - it's spoiled by Sofia Coppola and a bit by Franc D'Ambrosio, but Andy Garcia is fantastic, and the plot is great.

No-one's mentioned the Carry On series yet either.
