It's my 30th birthday this year so I'm looking for some thing special and remembered this. http://harrislove.com/images/Hamilton-Ventura-Icon-Watch.jpg. Wanted one ever since I was a little kid. Looks beautiful

Those Venturas look fantastic but do look a bit daft on your average white bloke. Would look great with a good suit though...

Christ on a bike!!! For the money you'd fork out on that you could buy a rather tasteful Mondaine Stop2Go, and still have money left over for that trip to Specsavers you've obviously been putting off.

Nah, while I'm sure Mondaine and very functional and reliable watches, they don't interest me in terms of looks.

The Hamilton looks odd compared to other watches in this thread but that's what I like. Reminds me of something out of a 50's sci-fi b movie.

I'm with you on that. The Hamilton may not be to everyone's taste, but it is iconic, different and without doubt, stylish. I like it. Go for it.

Mondaine? Yeah, nice, but they are everyday ordinary IMO, nothing special. The Ventura is the total opposite. I dont think you'd ever get tired of looking at it.
    This is nice too

Great different looking watch and a copy of a classic.

    Go for it.

Get the right size bracelet on the left one (should be 18mm) and take off the bracelet of the Seamaster if you are going to wear it. Those fit-all expandables gouge the inner lugs.

    Nice vintage trio.

wis for that.  Going off the beaten track is always worth a stab.  I spunked over £400 on a Vostok LunoKhod II,  I'm still not sure if I love it or not, but at least I know not everyone will have one.  I suppose buying your standard shape watch is a bit like buying a Strat: It very standard, not too exciting, and the world and his wife are going to have one.

Normally I change my own watch batteries , but due to a screw with a dodgy head, a situation I didn`t want to make any worse , I just got charged £21 to have one replaced in my favourite Mondaine .Without a battery it just sits in a drawer ,useless ( although it is correct twice a day) so it had to be done ,but I was stunned at the price.

I bought my own tools to replace batteries myself after getting charged £12 a few years ago , but £21 ,shocking.

I think I paid £8 for this recently. £21 seems a lot. But, you pay for the battery and someone's time to do it. You could have gone somewhere else I suppose.

Get this though - my wife has a Raymond Weil watch, which cost a few grand. THe battery replacement on that was £180.

Omega will charge you the same. They argue it also includes a bit of a service and changing the seals etc, but that sort of charge really is a con.

I had to have a new battery in a Tissot (my leaving present from my colleagues when I retired), and was told it had to go to the factory in Switzerland!  This because "it has to be re-sealed".

They were going to charge me £30 for the privilege, too, until I told them it was still under warranty as I hadn't had it a year, so it got done for free in the end.

I took my Oakley Blade into timpsons yesterday. The battery they changed died after a few months so I took it back because I had a guarantee. Turns out that the last guy messed the watch up some how so they're taking it to their workshop to get it fixed.

Hopefully they do as it was a birthday present that was bought for me on my first trip to Florida. They're hard to find now too.

I think they wanted me to go for the "lifetime replacement" deal at £27 , which sounds ok , but am I really going to go back every year  to make it worthwhile , and for how many years , and how long will I have the watch anyway? .

The main reason I chose the place was the dodgy screw head ( my bad btw) ,and its a specialist watch repair  shop , whereas some cowboy store might have made it worse , and I didn't fancy trying to get one of those tiny screws drilled out.

The £2.99 inc postage , "fake chronograph" watch , I bought from China about a month ago , is still keeping perfect time , and I still can`t decide whether to be impressed or annoyed , LOL.

Maybe thats a lesson learned , but its one I didn't want to learn.

very nice, Swatch are a very cool brand IMO and they quite probably saved the Swiss watch industry. I have a first edition Swatch from the early 80s somewhere. 1983 I think, could be 82, can't remember.
