Duelling guitarist - is it really necessary?

They do it with the backing singer, tambourine guy, cameraman, fuckin any poor soul that just happens to cross their path. Just watching Roger Waters, Us and Them and it annoys the shit out of me to the point where I had to fast forward. The stand-in Gilmore was duelling/posturing with an unfortunate bloke  - looked so fake and forced. It’s not just this concert or band, they all do it, and it never looks appropriate or needed.

It’s deeply passé and naff, I agree...but in some circles it’s basically expected as part of ‘stage craft’.

I witnessed one such duel that was exceptional though.  A band called "The Beat Farmers", an alt country/rock outfit in the 1980's at a bar in Victoria BC.   After several minutes of back and forth melt your face upstaging they took their guitars off and held them together strings to strings and proceeded to rub them up and down the necks, creating a cacophony I will not try to describe, nor will I forget it.
