I witnessed one such duel that was exceptional though.  A band called "The Beat Farmers", an alt country/rock outfit in the 1980's at a bar in Victoria BC.   After several minutes of back and forth melt your face upstaging they took their guitars off and held them together strings to strings and proceeded to rub them up and down the necks, creating a cacophony I will not try to describe, nor will I forget it.
I wonder if they nicked that idea from Blue Oyster Cult?

That's exactly what it looked like, so probably

    Chop a line, now. ;)
It's probably something to do with their album Mirrors.  But it could serve a dual purpose...

When I saw them he was using it to bounce lasers around, at one point bursting balloons - pretty sure there must have been some stage trickery involved as even in the innocent days of the early ‘80s bouncing lasers (particularly ones powerful enough to burst balloons) around an auditorium in an in a casual and unconstrained manner would have been frowned upon...

I couldn’t disagree more. I challenge you to a duel!
I'll take that as an insult, see you at dawn!

    That's cheating - you've got two weapons.

Brief glimpse at the very end of this clip...

...the commentary suggests that they took the original version of the laser show off the road in the late’70s but they were certainly doing something very similar in the early ‘80s when I saw them in Newcastle.

Me too - I still don’t really know what this thread is about. Someone please post a clip of a guitarist “duelling” with a backing singer or tambourine guy so I can understand how this looks in practice.

I think to qualify as a duel, both combatants have to be using the same weapon, no?
Some of the gear, some idea
