In no particular order and because of the passion they play with rather than necessarily being technically great:

    John Frusciante
    Mark Knopfler
    Eric Clapton
    George Harrison
    Bruce Springsteen

I’m a bit pissed I couldn’t find room for Duane Allman though

As a huge Duane Allman fan I have come to the realisation in the last couple of years that what I thought was Duane a lot of the time was Dickie.

    Jimi Hendrix
Bill Kelliher (+ Brent Hinds but I'm more into Bill's solid rhythm work)
    Tom Morello
    Jerry Cantrell
    Tim Sult

Honourable mention to Tom Delonge as I actually really rate all the guitar parts in a lot of the Blink stuff. Simple but often catchy and different to just chugging power chords.

    Clapton
    Angus
    Bonamassa
    Page
Slash (more a nostalgic vote these days as, for me anyway, GnRs music hasn’t aged as well as many other guitar based bands eg Black Sabbath).

5 really isn’t enough when you start thinking about it more carefully.

    In no particular order...

    Mayer
    Clapton
Larry Carlton (I think I'm the first one?...)
    Prince
    SRV

definitely not set in stone though

My minds gone a bit blank so I'm going to say, with a slight bias towards things I've listened to recently....

    Robin Trower
    Reb Beach
    Isaiah Mitchell
    Tony Iommi
    Marty Friedman

Could be a completely different list tomorrow.  I might have Blackmore and Uli Jon Roth in there.  Or Leslie West and Rick Derringer.  Or Frank Marino.  Or Ronnie Montrose.  And I didn't want to use two votes for Andy Powell and Laurie Wisefield but I do want to mention them.

    Wes Montgomery...

Struggling to choose actual favourites beyond that.

I really don’t know. But in any top 5, which could be different depending on what week of the year it is, Joe Bonamassa would always make the list.
I think he may be my favourite. Which I feel leaves me open for a panning.

It always used to be Iommi, Slash, Zakk Wylde, Bettencourt Etc, but as I’ve grown a bit older, I find them less relevant to the instrument and regardless of how many of Slashes solos across all the GnR albums (and the Snakepit stuff) I absolutely adore and can sing them back as nauseum, he doesn’t do it for me quite as much any more. He’d probably always be in my top 5 with Joe too. Just simply for being so memorable (I’ve always cited Guns N Roses as my favourite band), even if I find the technique and licks not particularly to my current tastes. That could change next week, though.

Ive just always been mesmerised by Bonamassa’s playing though, since I first heard him.

Stylistically he really puts me in a weird place. I love to try to copy him, but ultimately I don’t really class myself as a blueser. I’m more into hard/heavy/classic rock etc.

What I do know though, is that Joe makes me want to try to copy him and it inspires me to play my guitar more and keep improving. Can’t really ask for more than that.
