I have two hiscox cases one for strat one for L.p. Got two gig bags one came with my PRS the other is a Warwick rock bag I bought bought at a guitar show yonks ago. Generally I cases for gigs and bags for local open mics. We got the lad a mono case for his 5 string bass and it is excellent, I will be replacing the Warwick with one in the not too distant future. It is horses for courses though sometimes a hardcase is worth its weight other times a gigbag is a better bet.
    Don't touch that dial.

My mono bag is great for the tele but terrible for Gibsons because of the headstock angle. So the Gibsons go in hard cases.

I just bought a Hiscox case for my Gibson DC junior tribute. It is a solid guitar with not much finish but has the vulnerable Gibson headstock

The sooner I can get my guitars into a Hiscox hard case the better.

The only guitars I’ve bought with unnecessary dings and dents came in gig bags.

Ive had guitars in good gig bags too, including the lauded Suhr gig bag.  Hiscox every time for me.  I don’t understand why expensive guitars come in gig bags, either.  It’s an expensive instrument, so protect it.
I’m with you on this & Ive commuted on public transport in London. Hiscox every time.

I don’t get why PRS ship one of the worlds most ergonomic guitars in a case from 1953. Those massive cases are awful.

  • Another vote for Reunion Blues Continental. I use one for a Tele Thinline or Jazzmaster (though the Jazz does have to squeeze in a touch at the headstock end). I can’t understate the quality of this case. Done plenty of commutes on public transport with it, as well as biking to jams and rehearsals around town. Along with a lightweight amp and a thoughtfully curated mini pedalboard, it’s an easy and portable rig.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

  • Having rolled a car on the way home from a gig with Acoustic, Tele and a Strat in back next to full PA with heavy stands etc, I can vouch for Hiscox cases. If I had used gig bags I would have had at least two guitars trashed.

    The Tele would have survived!

I have to say I'm surprised that more guitarists don't use the semi-hard rigid foam cases though - they have most of the advantages of both types in that they protect the instrument almost as well as a hard case (arguably better against a drop, since they're less likely to transmit shock to it), but are lightweight and usually have shoulder straps and good pockets like a gig bag... and they're quite cheap.

Most classical musicians - who have instruments that are usually far more valuable and fragile than ours - use this type of cases.
I had one of those on a guild acoustic. I thought it was great and really wanted to find something similar for my electrics. Never managed to though.

Been using gig bags many years.  In the past I've used some quite flimsy ones although I've been using Mono for several years.  Never had any problem even with the flimsy ones - it's a question of knowing there's a vulnerability there and taking reasonable care.  But I mainly gig and rehearse locally, travel there by car (usually my own) etc so it's easy to manage the risk.  If I know a guitar was going in the hold of a plane I'd obviously have to think about that.

I hate hard cases. Bulky, heavy. I've got a Mono gig bag and its great.

I’ve rolled a car with all my gear in too! We should start a club.

I had a 100w Marshall Head, 4x12, a Telecaster and a Gretsch Malcolm Young in mine. All were fine. Remarkably I still did the gig later, although I was a bit shaky.

Gig bag for me, as others have said, difficult fitting multiple hard cases into a car. I only gig guitars that I don't mind damaging. "Dings a go go" but I'm fine with that, I have no plans to sell them anyway and fully accept that their resale value would be rock bottom.

  • You guys who rolled your cars: you didn't by any chance have all your hard cases piled on one side of the car when it happened, did you? ;)
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

Mono are indeed great - but when they changed distributors and the price leapt up - less enticing option
    Red ones are better.

...and did they rock ‘em before they rolled ‘em?
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

  • The idea of putting multiple guitars in gig bags into a splitter fills me with fear, unless they're in guitar trunks. When I'm buying a new guitar now I factor in the cost of a Hiscox Pro Series case, even if it comes with a hard case. I do have a Mono M80 but don't use it for gigs

I had an Escort estate, Strat in cheap hard case in on right then my Tele in 70s Fender case then Acoustic in Hiscox. Then 2 1x15” pa cabs then all stands etc. Guitar amps further in and all well packed.
Car went up in air and landed on drivers side after clearing a hedge. We were left with car on side with all weight on top of Strat.
Strat case broke apart, vol knob pushed through scratch plate and one pickup ruined. Tele case split on head stock end no damage to Tele. Took Hiscox out and tried my acoustic, no damage whatsoever to guitar or case.  We rolled car onto wheels in morning and I drove home, with no windscreen or back door and with whole rook bent over to left so had to duck my head whilst driving.
