I really don’t get gig bags

  • You guys who rolled your cars: you didn't by any chance have all your hard cases piled on one side of the car when it happened, did you? ;)
I had an Escort estate, Strat in cheap hard case in on right then my Tele in 70s Fender case then Acoustic in Hiscox. Then 2 1x15” pa cabs then all stands etc. Guitar amps further in and all well packed.
Car went up in air and landed on drivers side after clearing a hedge. We were left with car on side with all weight on top of Strat.
Strat case broke apart, vol knob pushed through scratch plate and one pickup ruined. Tele case split on head stock end no damage to Tele. Took Hiscox out and tried my acoustic, no damage whatsoever to guitar or case.  We rolled car onto wheels in morning and I drove home, with no windscreen or back door and with whole rook bent over to left so had to duck my head whilst driving.
Bloody hell. I was only joking about having the cases piled on one side of the car. Sorry, pretty bad taste I guess.

    Glad you were okay though!
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

I'm probably the only member of this forum mentioned by name in Whiskey in the Jar ;)

I've been using a Protection Racket electric guitar bag for about nine years and a Hiscox case for about twenty. Both of those hay been thoroughly abused and have not been found wanting. Moreover, both are still sensibly priced. £200 for a Mono is insane

By way of contrast, I've had Fender American Standard cases fall apart in a matter of weeks. The ones they ship the Pro in do not fill me with confidence, either.

I only trust my Suhrs in something I know is just as good as a case and my Mono is that - I'd also agree on the Reunion Blues ones - I know Josh Smith tours the world with these and where they will let you take the instrument on a plane as hand luggage that is better than a hardcase.

If you gig a lot the gigbag makes a wee bit more sense - easy to throw over your should so you can carry other stuff, can put stuff in all the extra pockets - keep extra strings, tools etc in it and easier to move around on public transport with it if you really need to. (Not done that for many years with a guitar admittedly!)
