My walls have thick plaster and when I’ve drilled holes for pictures etc the drill goes through effortlessly and rarely gets into masonry. Rawlplugs don’t feel that secre to me - any tips for attaching hangers to walls like this?
Get some 100mm screws and use two plugs per screw... they won’t come away from the wall!!!!

Don't hang them anywhere that gets direct sunlight.
He lives in the North East, it'll be fine. :)

The only real risk is from the hanger not being attached to the wall properly.
That's what happened with mine and why I switched to a rack.

Nothing fell but one or two of them started to pull out of the wall so I might have over time.

Not sure if it was the way I put them up or my walls - they're made of some material that the vast majority of inner house walls aren't apparently.

If in any doubt, get a pro to hang them
Don't think his other half might be happy about that...?
One time one even complimented on how well I'd installed it.

But then again they're often lying about things being well hung.

I use the excellent String Swing  wall hanging systems.

May I ask what fastenings would you recommend for modern-newbuild-plasterboard wall? Put a wooden batten up first and attach to that?

A nice looking piece of wood catching at least 2 studs would be ideal, though I've used plasterboard fixings you open (once in the wall) with a setting tool to hang various heavy things on plasterboard with no issues, TVs , radiators etc etc
