Dulling a sticky neck?

What's Hot
The finish on the back of my 2007 LP standard neck feels really sticky with a lot of drag. Is there anyway to address this and reduce the drag/friction somehow?

I remember reading something about rubbing the back of the neck with a kitchen sponge scouring pad to dull the finish???

Any advice on simple ways to do this at home?

Gove it a good rub down with meths then lighter fluid, towel dry then see if that gets rid of the draginess?

Most gloopy neck finish cuts back really easily with the finest of abrasion. I use very fine sanding pads but a gentle kitchen kitchen scourer/sponge would probably work really well. You’ll probably be surprised just how quickly it gets back to a gorgeous satin feel.

Talcum powder is abrasive. Put some on your hand before you play. It stops stickiness immediately, and over time reduces the gloss finish to silk.

There’s a space on my pedal board for a Johnson’s baby powder container.

Micro mesh pads will work. Here’s a useful link to the process:

Use sand paper to take all the finish off so it's down to the wood. Then rub in a few coats of gun stock oil, and even some gun stock wax. I did this to my Epi LP custom and the neck now feels incredible. I'm someone that detests sticky necks though and prefer the aged neck feel or the ebmm feel. It's all about the feeling baby!

Some fine grade wire wool can work for this, just make sure you mask off your pickups otherwise you'll end up with little bits of metal stuck to them. I did it on my old Epiphone and it improved the feel considerably.

This a timely thread as I’ve got the same issue.

Do people think this would reduce the value of the guitar if I were to remove the gloss? Obviously assuming I did a neat job of it!

On an new(ish) guitar, just playing it normally fixes it within a few months.

On a 2007, I would have expected the finish to harden up by now though.

This allows you to remove the drag and keep the gloss if you buff up to 12000g with no buffing compund... no loss to value

agree - I tend to use a 3M Scotch Brite pad (look like a Brillo Pad) - soft grade - No debris so no taping up like wire wool - easy to use - Do a bit, check, then do a bit more if required

I used Gibson polish and a cloth. Worked perfectly.

Well that was easier than I thought. Nice silky finish in about 30 minutes work. Thanks @pjf
