When someone says 8.5 lbs

  • Anything up to 10lbs, I reckon.

When I weigh myself, there’s a certain way of standing on my scales that makes me half a stone lighter. I’m sure it must work with guitars.....

Is this like when Miss World contestants in the 70s used to say they were “five feet twelve” so as not embarrass their sub-six foot, invariably 15 years older boyfriends?

I’ve never weighed a single one of my guitars!

My Gretsch rat rod feels about as heavy as my tele as my LP Junior... my Ibanez is lightest, my Ltd phoenix is what I would call heavy as shit.. ie my back hurts after standing with it for half hour..

Maybe I should weigh them tomorrow to see..

    8.5lb isn’t heavy I don’t think. I’m not bothered until a guitar is north of 10lb.

I just weighed myself with and without the Ltd Phoenix... because curiosity.

It’s 10.141lbs. I guess thats what I’d call heavyish then.

Then again I am 16.5 stone currently which is fucking mental lol.

It depends on the guitar. An 8.5lb Strat feels much heavier than a 8.5lb Les Paul to me. I don’t mean just relative to what you expect them to weigh - a Les Paul is more compact and feels lighter to me. Something big like a 335 feels really heavy even if it weighs the same.

Depnds what it is. Would be very light for a les paul
And apparently too heavy for The Fretboard
If the fretboard weighed 8 and a half pounds the whole guitar would be a stonker

Think you’re onto something there, I don’t know what the physics explanation would be but seems intuitive that the more the weight is concentrated near your hand the less unwieldy and so lighter feeling it’d be

    Do you think..

    8 lbs 5 oz

    or

    8lbs 8 oz?
Neither, my first thought is “who the f£&k weighs their guitars?”...

Never occurs to me to weigh a guitar.
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

I think I’d always assumed that people weren’t using the decimal correctly, I’ve seen people say 7.4lbs for example and I’m assuming they’ve not done the maths and are actually saying 7lbs 4oz

I only ever weighed my Fingerbone Strat. When I first got it I thought 'damn this is heavy! how much does it weigh?'.
Turns out the whole thing is maple.
I sometimes think, therefore I am intermittent

Basschat once did a "Who's got the heaviest bass" thread.

IIRC the winner was an all maple Warwick 6 string which was over 20lb!

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

i have a solid maple les paul type guitar that only weighs 9lb

i agree with others about shape... i also have an iceman in the same weight range that feels stupidly heavy because most of the weight is behind the bridge

    20lb!

Ah, ok it was a 6 string. I imagine there must have been some serious support in the neck.

I bought a guitar last Friday which he said was 8.7lbs. I knew he didn’t mean 8lbs 7oz, but it didn’t sound like much over eight and a half pounds. I weighed it myself when I got home and 8.7lbs is in fact 8 lbs 11oz. It’s a 70’s strat, so it’s par for the course, lighter than it could have been. It feel comfortable on a strap so it’s not an issue to me.

I think I would struggle with anything over 10lbs though.

  • The weight of a guitar matters if you have a dodgy shoulder and gig a lot. (Ah, the old days)  There's no way I could get through a 3 set gig with a heavyweight guitar.  I think my heaviest is 8lb 2oz.

Who'd have thought this thread would end up peppered with comments like "who the fuck weighs their guitars?" and "you call 8.5 lbs heavy?"  I'm totally shocked.

No-one is stopping all you macho men playing your '70s Fenders and 11 lb Les Pauls.  Fill your boots.
