Great to see more actual Epiphone models coming back. Very tempted by the Royal Tan...

Also noticed this Casino in the Olive drab finish...

  • Nice, like the sunburst one.  I’d take the pickguard off.
Never had mini HB’s before, always fancied a guitar with them.

  • Anderton’s have just today whizzed round an email and demo of the RT Riviera and a Casino. I have owned an Original 1964 RT Riviera for over 21 years now and I can say that the sound on the demo is really close to that of my own. The reissue styling is more the earlier circa 62 body shape (nice) whereas my own has the slightly slimmer cutaway horns typical of this era. I suspect that these will fly out of the shop door. They look brilliant value.

I concur- I’ve also got a ‘64 & these look very good for the price.

Are they slightly reliced or does the 'worn' just describe the colour? Amazes me that Gibson haven't picked up more on the demand for relicing.

  • Frustratingly, they are not even in stock at Andertons or GuitarGuitar even though they have both put videos up!

I'm not loving the Laurel that they're using for the fingerboards. Not a fan at all.

Some of it looks bad, some seems to look ok. Have you played any with it?

Laurels fine. I actually though based on the videos I have seen of these that the laurel in those examples are much darker than what I've intially received with the squiers I have bought.

I dont really care either way though, it darkens up fine with some lemon oil.

Yes, I bought one of the new Coronets. Had it for a week or so I think. The Laurel feels rough and gritty, and when bending you not only feel it, but hear it too. I've given it a pamper with F-One oil, but no difference, and F-ONE is something I swear by, it works wonders with Rosewood. I've got some of that Montys wax enroute, my plan is to go over it with some fine steel wool, and give it some coats of the Montys.

In fairness, the laurel is quite a hardy wood.

They don’t mention that on Anderson’s videos do they! How is the Coronet in general?

Can anyone explain the £200 price difference? I know a centre-block doesn't cost that.

The £110 increase on the new ES335 too. The only thing I can think of is desirability. Maybe they know the Riviera will be popular.

I love it, can't put it down. Don't like the Laurel, and the hardware is a bit guff, won't stay in tune even overnight. But it's the perfect platform for upgrading, and thats what my plan is. I'll be sorting the fretboard out as described, got Kluson 3 on a plate tuners coming, Faber compensated wraparound, Faber locking studs. The pots are good, so next is to decide what pickup goes in. Probably a Lollar, as the ones in my DC sound great. So that's the plan. It's not perfect, but for £349 it's the coolest guitar going.

You could say gloss finish, less common pickups and tailpiece, but I know that doesn’t add up to £200. Regardless I still think Riviera is still a good price. The Casino is just a bargain at £399.

  • CME has the Casino in an exclusive sunrise orange colour. Think it looks great, shame it's not available in the UK.
