James' So Long, Marianne and Lloyd Cole's Chelsea Hotel are great covers of Leonard Cohen songs. I prefer them but perhaps sometimes I think I find Cohen's originals are just a bit slow and a bit of pace brings them to life.
I agree.  Have a listen to the album Famous Blue Raincoat by Jennifer Warnes.  A great album of LC covers affectionately known as "Jenny sings Lenny".

I think Leonard Cohen is like Bob Dylan - a lot of people think their songs are better sung by other people because they’re “great songwriters but can’t really sing”... but when you really listen, in almost every case the original version is the best.

What about Status Quo's reworking of "Junior's Wailing".

The original recording by the band Steamhammer was a decent enough heavy 12 bar blues but Quo's version on the 1976 live album is one of the all time great moments in rock - IMHO.   I'm having that played at my funeral.

"Fire" - Pointer Sisters version vs. Brucie's

"We wish you a Merry Christmas" by The Greedie B@stards (Jones/Cook/Gorham/Lynott) vs anybody else's version. ever :)

The Fall's version of Lost in Music is sublime.

Happy Mondays version of Step On takes the John Kongas verse a step up (sic),

Teddy Pendergast did a better version imho of don't leave me this way than the communards and Harold Melvin and the blue notes (which he sang on so he covered himself)

    Soup  dragons I'm Free  (stones).

The carpenters version of calling occupants of interplanetary craft Is the definitive one.

I call both versions of Mad World a draw.

Ike & Tina Turner's version of Proud Mary is a classic, and miles better than the Creedence Clearwater Revival original which just plods along.

Sorry to drag this thread back from the dead, but I'd never heard this cover version until last weekend.  I don't think it's better than the original, but I'm very surprised (a) that they chose to record it and (b) that it's really rather wonderful.

Don Williams recorded his take of the Merle Haggard song 'Sing me back home', and I think it is better than the original.

Every version on that list is a better version than the turgid arse gravy by the Eagles!…

  • Is this a cover of 'One' by U2, or a cover of 'One' by Metallica? Or is technically both?

Who cares, either way it's frigging tremendous...
