3,000 years of longing (Amazon prime). Academic Tilda Swinton, in Istanbul for work, encounters Djinn Idris Elba. Great storytelling, making a refreshing change from the usual Amazon fodder of superheroes, psychopaths etc. Recommended

    Looper

Sci Fi time travel garbage not very well done.  Emily Blunt is always worth watching, but beyond that I didn't think much of it.

    5/10

    Prime, I think.

    Eat, Pray Love

Odious plot in a film of utter nothing-else-really-happens and what does happen is predictable bollocks.  Hated every second of its two hour + run time.

    2/10

    Netflix

Okay so despite all the comments here I watched Luther (Netflix) last night.

It wasn't as bad as I'd feared it would be. Totally ludicrous though.

Luther was another film I turned off. Just total unrealistic cheese. To think that guy was Stringer Bell !

    Arlington Road

1999 thriller with Jeff Bridges as the widowed university professor who befriends a neighbouring family (Tim Robbins & Joan Cusack) after finding their son injured in the road on his commute home.

At first his new friends seem perfectly normal but progressively red flags go up and he begins to suspect his new neighbours might be plotting an act of terrorism, as his own behaviour seems more and more irrational and unhinged to those who know him.

Clever plot and quite a gripping film. I have seen it before but it has stood the test of time very well, apart from the sometimes jarring background music it hasn’t aged much at all.

    A solid 8/10 from me.

How have I not seen this before now? I’d heard it was good but never remembered to watch it.
Absolutely loved it. Incredible film. A proper story, amazing visuals and score. Quite brilliant.
    10/10

Reminded me a bit of Sunshine  so we watched that the next night. A lot weirder and scarier than I had remembered, also has half The Avengers cast in it, so my daughter was v happy.

The only thing better than The Godfather is The Godfather Part II.

(Although a few other films in other genres are equally good.)

I confess ... for my sins I am currently watching 'Fire Down Below' ... only because Steven Seagal is a "serious player".

It's 5h1te of course and I remember it from years ago but it's a reflection of how bad the offerings are on TV.

The best bit is the end ...  Harry Dean Stanton playing bluegrass on a porch ... with a tad of Dylan in the background.

    24 Hour Party People

i missed it first time round. Ok. I didn’t. I avoided it because I can’t bear Coogan. But it’s a good fun ride through the developing Manchester music scene from the late 70s pistols free trade hall gig to the closing of the Hacienda. Fun. 7/10

Empire of Light - sad, but ultimately reaffirming about life.

As always Olivia Colman is superb, but a strong supporting cast too. Great 1980s soundtrack.

    10/10

I have to confess too that I like the Steven segal films ,although I think he went through a phase of about 2 years where he made some bad ones, I read somewhere that he was low on money and was just taking anything he could get

Which bit - that Part II is better, or that a (very) few other films are as good? If it’s the first, we can agree to disagree ;).

If it’s the second, watch Apocalypse Now! and see if you still think I’m wrong :). (Perhaps not coincidentally, also by Coppola.)

Thats funny as at the end of the film I told my daughter that the next stage of her education would be Apocalypse Now :-)

You'd be a great substitute Dad for her if I ever run off with Katy Perry

so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.
