Finally got round to listening to ELP. I think the only band i have not visited from the good old growing up days of the 70's is Genesis

So what's your opinion of ELP then?

  • I thought ELP was just what they called an album in Yorkshire.

As a matter of fact some of the interplay stuff they were doing was very nearly on a par with Return To Forever

I grew up with the music of that era, heavy stuff and prog. ELP are my least favourite of the big proggers - Genesis, Yes, Crimson, VDGG, Gentle Giant and so on. Genesis my favourite, in fact one of my favourite bands ever (Gabriel era that is)  after four and a half decades. I would suggest that you start with Foxtrot.

…them too definitely. :-) VDGG and GG were bands I only really explored in depth and came to appreciate later, more challenging but very rewarding.

I used to work with a guy who played bass in an ELP tribute band.

They used to play at Keith Emerson's birthday bashes.

Mindblowing genius in parts... pompous drivel in others. Sometimes in the same song.

eg, 'Battlefield' on Tarkus contains probably my favourite recorded guitar tone ever - and a truly diabolical keyboard part.

Also a couple of candidates for the best and worst album covers of all time.

(If you think the front cover of Tarkus is bad, try the inside of the gatefold!)

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

I love lots of ELP stuff, they also have a fair bit of terrible music.

If you want one ELP album go for the live Welcome back my friends ..... It has many of their greatest songs and has tons of energy.

I haven't heard a lot of their music, but what I have heard I haven't really liked. Too much keyboard for me.
As for Tarkus; rubbish album, great cover. In my humble opinion.

Just a rumour because it sounded funny, as far as I know. I can’t imagine Jimi fitting in with their style.

I’ve not heard a lot of their stuff apart from the more popular things like Fanfare for the Common Man.
