This Number Plate.

We were driving back from Wimbledon Common this morning and ended up at a set of traffic lights behind a very smart looking black Land Rover Discovery with the personalised number plate 'ARY41V'.  Now laid out on the plate the only way I could and can still read it is as 'Aryan' and if so is the guy for real and would it be a legally issuable plate?  There was a big shit storm in New Zealand about a guy who owned a car with 'ARYAN 1' as a number plate and it was declared as 'hate speech'.  Alternatively if he has made an horrendous oversight what could it have supposed to have spelt?

The DVLA can ban what it sees as potentially offensive plates such as these banned ones -

I used to date a woman in the "Cherished Marks" dept when I worked at the DVLA.  She used to spend hours with her colleagues thinking up rude number plates and adding them to their book of 'marks not to be issued', or as they called it, the "Skid-marks book" :-)

There used to be an old Cortina IIRC round our way with OBO110X. Surprised that got past the DVLA. Always fancied a guitar-based one myself such as LE59AUL or MU57ANG.

You sure? It isn't on the DVLA database. There's a BA57 ARO, but that's on a Merc SLK.

That is pretty much my take on it.

Particularly if after pissing around with the spacing, strategic black screw covers etc it is still that vague that they feel the need write underneath what it's supposed to mean...

It might have been ARO at the end I suppose and he could have got a new car by now. He cut me up enough times to not forget him.
Thinking about it now his might have been BA51 ARD (or possibly ARO) but it didn't leave you in much doubt as to what he was spelling.

I've seen that very car myself.  The plate is obviously to demonstrate they are a true believer and as such, despising all Western values....except for our luxury cars and the frivolous materialism that fuels the sales of personalised number plates.

Slightly aside but I remember seeing a triumph spitfire with a picnic hamper on the back. The reg was ANY 1 4 T
