which are the best wacky pedals ?

What's Hot

I know a little about compressors, flangers, phasers etc. but not so much about the more esoteric (or completely mad) pedals out there.

Any that are more useable than others, any that just startle old ladies and small children?

It depends what you call usable I guess

The digi synth wah is awesome fun but it is useless in a band context.
Langtronics bone collector is good fun
    Mr Black Downward Spiral
    EQD Organizer is good
EQD Rainbow machine can be fun and surprisingly usable when dialed in
    Boss Tera Echo
Lovetone Ring Stinger/Meatball/Doppelganger/? Flanger - properly pricey though
    EHX B9 organ thingy
Digitech whammy mk iv or v (Adolph) can be fun
    Ebow
Line 6 FM4 has some mad settings on it

They're all a bit quirky and entertaining depending on how you tweak them
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

  • WMD Geiger Counter is a great and really a fun pedal if you don't mind things getting pretty full on, can be a bit hard to tame at times though, but really rewarding. In the same vain the Catalinbread Heliotrope is pretty fun. I think the Boss Slicer looks like you could have a good laugh with it as well, but not a cheap option.

I'm not bothered about a band setting, I'm looking for fun ways to spice up solo acoustic performances - I already have a setup with a multi fx and a couple of other pedals which works well (with an acoustic amp to monitor things) so I'm looking for some weird and wonderful pedals to mess around with.

I have - it would be a laugh to see people's faces, but £100+ is quite a lot for a laugh :)

having said that, I have owned two FM4s and I do have the B9 Organ Machine here, but it's a gift for a friend - having tried it out I shall buy one for myself sometime soon.

  • Flangers can get quite extreme.

  • For cheap thrills, I still say synth wah. My mate gigs his regularly (on bass, uses guitar version) and it sounds great - it's for a really heavy synth tone.

It's a bit bonkers though - whether it's useful or not for you, gawd knows.

there was a recent Discussion about loopers and electro acoustics and there are some cheaper options now. Maybe not wacky but you can get some level of annoying an audience out of one.

  • Digitech bass synth wah. Far better than the guitar one on guitar or bass.

DOD Gonkulator. Mental and pointless. Totally awesome.

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

I have an RC-50 for looping, though I might get one of the small ones too.

I've never heard the bass one :( I love the guitar one on bass though, it's genuinely got some useful sounds, I just wish the filters were on a treadle (see other thread).

The guitar one on guitar is quite good, but maybe I should get a bass one. Hmm...
