Who are your top 5 guitarists?

What's Hot

In a bit of a rut with finding new music / guitarists to listen to as I feel I’ve absolutely hammered the 60’s and 70’s, so I was wondering if you could all help a brother out and name your top 5 guitarists to give me (and hopefully other members) some new players to listen to.

Doesn’t have to be in any particular order or even genre. Would love to see who people listen to. Doesn’t have to be too obscure either, I’m sure there’s some well known names I and others have not heard much of.

I’ll start:

1. Stephen Stills
2. Mike Bloomfield
3. Roy Buchanan
4. Robben Ford
5. Albert King

Could list loads more but thought 5 would keep it simple.

Cheers!

Go the other way and listen to something with no guitar like Medulla by Bjork. Even if you don't like it, the only instrument on there is voice, and it's fun to listen to how she's manipulated it to sound like other instruments.

I actually didn't realise the first times I heard the album, then there's a documentary on the making of it which I watched open mouthed like wtf?
It's called The Inner or Deep Part Of An Animal or Plant Structure, but I've had a quick look and can't find it atm.

There are others I respect and like because they are good or great, but they'll be mostly within the stuff you say you've done to death. My favourite players from my generation is probably a better title for my list:

    Jack White
    Nick Zinner
    Johnny Greenwood
    St Vincent
Laura Marling (a bit different than the others :) )
Please note my communication is not very good, so please be patient with me

Off the top of my head, I may miss someone important:

I'm a big prog fan, and my fave band is Pendragon. Guitarist/singer/sole writer Nick Barrett plays wonderful melodic proggy solos. He's right up there for me. My choices are pretty proggy all through, I basically like players who solo a lot, but more melodic rather than jazz noodly

I love strats and strat sounds, and my fave exponent is Thomas Blug. He plays instrumental music with wonderful tones, superb touch and feel. The one must have album is Thomas Blug live in Raalte. Beautiful.

I've been a long time fan of Joe Satriani, it's insane the number of melodic instrumental tracks he has written. Lots of great stuff, but my go to albums are the live ones, he turns it up a notch on them.

One of the most important guitarists for me was Steve Rothery of Marillion. Having said that its all about those first 4 albums with Fish though, I find post-Fish Marillion a bit dull. His solo effort Ghosts of Pripyat is also excellent.

Dipping yet again into the prog thing, I love Steve Hackett. Immense Genesis albums plus some amazing solo stuff. He played possibly my favourite ever solo on Firth of fifth. I have to see him live every time he goes out playing his 'Genesis revisited' shows.

Cheers for the comments everyone! There’s plenty to go at there! I didn’t realise Johnny Marr was so revered. I always thought he was a bit of a McGuinn copy so I’ll have to broaden my horizons and check my prejudice and give him a listen! Thanks Axisus for such a detailed reply too.
