The Raveonettes are from Denmark, that disproves that one for me at least.
Regarding Scotland-
Bert Jansch
Big Country/ Skids
The Primevals
Alex Harvey
Nazareth- not really a fan but they were very good
Teenage Fanclub
Shirley Manson......
Pipes can be fabulous- check out Hamish Moore (preferably solo)
Nazareth were never good..
they were the band you so wanted to be good cos the cover to No Mean City is sooo hugely cool..
you sit there looking at the album cover... wanting epic and awesome..
and no matter how hard you try, you just totally fail to like what falls out of your speakers..
Oddly, given recent sad news, Primal Scream have yet to be mentioned.
Had not realised Bobby Gillespie played drums for J&MC.
Well, maybe more your thing than mine so I won't argue, but...
Starlight Starbright, This Flight Tonight? I liked those at the time. You're right about that great cover, no idea about the contents. (I'd avoid the book)
I also see others filled out most of my list before me anyway. ;-
No Mean City was the first cassette I ever bought. I thought it was a fine album at the time but, yes, the cover was better. I then saw them on the NMC tour and IIRC they didn't play a single song off it. They were also supported by Saxon who had twice the audience Nazareth did the night I saw them. http://cdn-images.9cloud.us/56/nazareth___no_mean_city_900x900_669336682.jpg

Saw a summary a while back that the English will often interchange English/England with British/Britain without thinking, the Scottish and Welsh distinguish the nationalities, but only the Northern Irish will correct you on the difference between Great Britain and the UK.
Robert Burns, that white boy sure could sing the blues ..... shang - a - lang :-O
