    Nazareth were never good..

they were the band you so wanted to be good cos the cover to No Mean City is sooo hugely cool..

you sit there looking at the album cover... wanting epic and awesome..

and no matter how hard you try, you just totally fail to like what falls out of your speakers..

So true!  That Rodney Matthews cover!

You summed it up nicely, they always looked like they should be good.... Dan McCafferty had a great voice, but they were a pretty average band really.

I'm not sure I can think of any Scottish bands I'm really a fan of.  Lots of individual band members though.

Anyone mentioned the great Jimmy Dewar (RIP), Robin Trower's original bassist/vocalist?

And come to think of it, current on/off Trower vocalist Davey Pattison.

Very different musical style, but I quite like Edwyn Collins/Orange Juice too.

Just re Deacon Blue- genuinely now, not jesting as I possibly was before, the girl in that band was utterly awful and her melodic interventions were exactly the opposite of that....

sorry to worsen your pain, but your past tense in regard to Deacon Blue is misplaced - their new album just came out ;)

Yeah but they're NOT one country yet, right?

Ah, the English always get confused about this one. Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and even England are countries within the United Kingdom, but not independent ones.

Saw a summary a while back that the English will often interchange English/England with British/Britain without thinking, the Scottish and Welsh distinguish the nationalities, but only the Northern Irish will correct you on the difference between Great Britain and the UK.
    Stupid English
    ;) I know it's really a case of what's relevant to people.

Or Eastern european if you believe some.  :D

Agreed and wisdom to you to, Maggie Bell has a great voice and great body of work, should have mentioned Maggie Reilly too for similar reasons.

They are rather good indeed, saw them man and boy since starting out way back when and growing into what they were.

Went to school with Wayne the original Bas player and friendly with an Eaglesham or two, plus Andy the guitarist for many years.

It's another one of those irregular verb/nouns isn't it?

Britain delights as home grown Andy Murray wins Wimbledon

Scotland mourns as local boy Murray loses in first round

Oh god not the Murray thing again! It never actually happens, only in the imagination of a certain type of person.

That was David Coulthard. Murray actually wins something occassionally ;)

Not on the BBC ... Murray is usually a Scot whilst F1 driver Hamilton is British. See below - Murray winning Wimbledon so not losing.

The BBC don't like using the term English ...

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

I do recall someone interviewing some Scots when England won the Rugby World Cup "You must be delighted for your neighbours" "No, why would we be? We've been at war with them for 2000 years."

This is arguably a forum for guitar players.
Mark Knopfler (born in Glasgow) is arguably the worlds greatest living guitarist.      :D
