    I own a £320 jumper. So I'm a brainless poseur.

But I bought it with cash. So I'm practically aristocracy.

But it was in the sale for £61, so I'm "a bit council".

It is stripey and lovely though, so screw you all.
    stripy or hoopy ?

(now we'll see where you really lie...........................)
Stripey. If it was an item of sports-related clothing then it'd be hoopy, but it is not.

Charity shops are a good place to fake being wealthy. We buy all our clothes there - you get worn-once tee shirts from all the big high Street brands, lovely jackets that retail for £100 for a £10 and occasionally you'll find a quality pair of UK made shoes.

I informed my sister in law of this. She's... Snobby? Maybe? I don't like to say that, but her response to this information was (word for word, I quote exactly):

"we really respect our belongings, so we only buy brand new".

When they found out their (brand new, sealed) gift came from a charity shop, they gave it back.
I like charity shops, had some amazing bargains.

Gear4 Dab radio with aux in (just add £3 BT module) £4
    Sony headphones £2
Sony iPod remote controlled stereo docking station with aux in (just add £3 BT module) £4.50
£50 brand new carry bag £3
    Laminator £4

Also had loads of clothes and some shoes. I actually buy most of my shoes on Ebay though, always slightly worn so basically someone else has worn them in for me.

I feel a bit let down that no-one's used the phrase "culture of envy". That always provokes debate.

  • There are lots of very insecure people out there.

You simply have more sense than them and better priorities.

  • I used to judge the general quality of a person by how expensive their cars were.

I now realise this is far too shallow.

In fact the quality of their footwear is a much better indicator of a person's basic respectability.

Anyone with any common sense knows that cheap/nasty  shoes can really f@ck your feet up.

I judge them by how well worn their Harris Tweed and Breeks are . It goes without saying that the car will be a 26 year old Volvo that smells of wet Springer Spaniel and that they will have a pair of Oxblood Brogues or Cherry Reds that were handed down by their father .......... (.together with the Estate ! )
........and they still ponce drinks off the beaters in the pub.
Probably called Giles ,Milo or Hugo

It’s not about The Cash, it’s about The Dash…

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend
He referred to the dates on the tombstone
    From the beginning...to the end

He noted that first came the date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years

For that dash represents all the time
That they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
Know what that little line is worth

For it matters not, how much we own,
    The cars...the house...the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So, think about this long and hard.
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
    That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real
    And always try to understand
    The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
    And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
    Like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
    Remembering this special dash
Might only last a little while

So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life's actions to rehash...
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent YOUR dash?

I can't remember the exact quote but over 25 years ago, I saw Ally McBeal and there was this episode about death and what is important.  What is important isn't job title or how much money you have, a person's achievement and wealth are defined by the people who come to his or her funeral.
Nope. 100% disagree with the second half of this.

How people perceive me is completely unimportant.

wealth for me is some balance between free time and money. My neighbor is wealthy, he earns enough to not struggle, works 50% and he spends so much time with his kids, doesn’t buy much and is very happy. He has a great balance. Life is for enjoying as best you can.
It means the family that you have gained and the friends you made along the way in your life.

If you think friends and family are not something you should have, fair enough!

I must say I couldn't care less if no one is at my funeral other than my kids.

I suspect my wife will also attend mine to check I'm really dead.
You are the dreamer, and the dream...

The celebrant at my little brother's funeral recited that poem. Very apt as his dash was just short of 50 years. Given that one of our friends described him as "a brilliant human" and another as "the nicest guy he ever met", his dash went quite well...
