I usually think of this as mastery being relative to what other people can achieve, the piano is an 'easier' instrument than either guitar or violin in terms of the basics of getting sound out of it, but some people see it as the most accomplished instrument, because the repertoire becomes complex enough to push the limits of what the best players can do with the instrument.

That is true for pretty much any instrument though, at the top level!
