Does anyone on here like modern dance music (EDM, Tropical House, etc.)?

Or are we all listening to Hendrix, SRV, and Led Zep with some Arctic Monkeys thrown in?

I like all that classic guitar rock stuff (from Elvis forwards) but I am totally loving a load of modern pop dance music like David Guetta, Kygo, etc.

Am I unusual? or are there more of us in here?

Problem for me is, I always HATED clubbing.

It was pre fag ban, so the clubs were all a thick fog of fag smoke which made me ill, I've never been comfortable in large groups or noisy places.

So apart from the usual 90s crossover acts (Prodigy, who haven't aged well, Chemical Brothers...) I was never really a big dance music fan.

If it had been more like this (and I've never tried E which it is strongly implied they are all on) then I might have felt differently...

    I make it, so yeah.

Not a huge fan of the overtly commercial stuff.
But there is a lot of good stuff out there.

...so, so much music is about time, place, nostalgia, and how old we were and what we were doing when we first heard it...

  • Pop EDM is mostly garbage IMO :)

    Prefer the more quirky stuff

Roisin Murphy - Hairless Toys, Ruby Blue
    Little Dragon
    Fever Ray
    Kiasmos
    Jon Hopkins
    Jordan Rakei

I'm not a big fan of a lot of new dance music but I was massively into it from the 90's through to the early 00's.

I went to my first rave when I was 15 (1994) at Linford Film Studios in Battersea.

I was into jungle / drum and bass then got caught up in the garage scene when it kicked off in the mid - late 90s.

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

  • Not sure what you'd categorise this as, but I like Röyksopp, Air, Zero 7, Groove Armada, etc.

categorisation is one of the issues for me.

I used to be able to distinguish between hard rock and heavy rock (?)

But I'm not sure exactly what EDM is.

I can identify tropical house pretty easily. And House.

Exactly, I'm too old to get off my tits on MDMA.  :/

EDM is a broad catch all for Electronic Dance Music.
It is disco, house, techno, trance, dubstep etc.

Within each genre you have a number of sub genres:

Progressive House, Electro House, Micro House; Minimal Techno etc.

Some genres are essentially blended, for instance Tech House which has elements of Techno and House music.
A lot of genres are blurred these days, for instance some Minimal Techno artists are doing fairly maximal work.

It also depends on how it is made, for instance there is a resurgence in modular synthesisers over the last decade.
So there ends up being little subgenres within subgenres.

    This might help:

Yes, I do - I had a large number of large dance/trance mix/compilation albums from the mid-90s to about 2010... but I did cull a lot due to much of it sounding much of a muchness :). I haven't been near a club since about 1985 though, nor ever taken MDMA.

I listen to all kinds of music in search of new influences. I dabbled in Electronic music, but I switched back to guitars as there was more of a connection with the instrument. I still use electronic elements, and I would encourage everybody to enhance their sound palettes for a different musical perspective.

I've listened to some of that stuff over the years and enjoyed it.

I'm sure that someone must have observed this before, but for a musicians forum we don't talk about music much.

I realised some time ago that rock n roll is dance music - and obviously people danced to the Beatles. People were probably dancing to Jimi Hendrix at the time.

Modern dance music really moves me (not all of it obviously) in the same way that Elvis did the first time I heard it when I was a child.

And after all, music is about emotion.

Maybe that's partly because there's such a diverse range of musical tastes, so such discussions either fizzle out quickly because few are interested, or descend into "I love 'em" versus "I hate 'em".

(Just to be clear, in responding to that comment I'm not self-identifying as a musician.)

Be fair, he’s not *that* bad…

I can actually listen to a few things he’s done.
