    +1 for Steve Marriott
    Joe Cocker
    Kelly Jones
    Rod Stewart

I like a gravelly voice (you should hear my Mrs :) )

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

@Rocker +1 for Jim Reeves ...he's my guilty secret.  I love his voice.  And his songs are pure catharsis.
@dogload -- oh yes, Bob Calvert.  I get that.

    For me:
    The ladies
    Liz Fraser
    Natalie Merchant

    The fellas:
Leonard Cohen -- If I could say "the soul is in the voice" without sounding metaphysical I'd say I was confused.  But Cohen is.
Roy Johnson; Cedric Myton; Watty Burnett -- The Congos*.  Three men, one voice.  I never tire of their sound.  If you don't know it, perhaps you should.

  • Elizabeth Fraser. Actually, her voice is probably my favourite sound, full stop.
    Rachel Goswell
    Jon Auer
    Alex Chilton
    Karen Carpenter
    Nick Drake
    Kim Deal
    Rose Berlin Garcia

My wife asked me to stop singing Wonderwall.
    I said maybe.....

Surprised no one mentioned Bowie yet. Peter Murphy has an amazing voice too.

  • Those that I can think of-

    The Tallis Scholars
    Bettye LaVette
    JJ Cale
    Howling Wolf
Steve Earle (when he's on his game)
Lucinda Williams (when she's on her game, there's some YouTube vids where she sounds terrible, but they really aren't representative)
    early Elvis Costello
    Chris Knight
    Lux Interior
    Nick Cave (Birthday Party period)
    Hope Sandoval
    Robert Fisher (Willard Grant Conspiracy)
    Jake Burns

+100 for Shirley Mansun, also for kd lang, though I liked her country stuff best, Jackie Leven particularly with Doll By Doll

I agree, he's a fantastic singer but as a guitar player I sometimes think he's almost "too good".  I love the Forty Deuce album which is straight up hard rock without much in the way of guitar wizardry.

try and get the live Talk Talk vid in Montreaux 1986. It's absolutely brilliant and Hollis is incredible in his performance and intensity. And the live versions of the songs are great
Definitely. You can see it on Sky Arts from time to time.

I am going through a bit of a musical renaissance at the moment, revisiting all the bands I skipped over (predominantly the 80's) and Talk Talk are one of them. I'm not sure what it is about MH, but he has just the most expressive monotone voice ever. If you see what I mean.  :-?

    @Phil_aka_pip  - that was I.
She's rumoured to be doing Glastonbury next year, the same spot Dolly Parton did. Rumours are rumours but I'm hopeful.
I have a framed 4ft square print of the Warhol album cover 'Silk Electric' on my over my fire place, my wife bought it me.
    I'm a huge fan.

Hopefully she won't be 'delayed' at Heathrow this time either!
