The Apple TV box is probably what you need. They are about £80 and work with iPhones and iPads.

you think one of these would fit right into a Virgin TiVo network setup?

  • As far as I know, they just connect into a spare input in your TV via an HDMi lead.

This .. Apple do cable that costs about £30 that allows me to connect my phone and iPad to the TV.

I was at a friends house and she was doing all this stuff ^ WITHOUT any boxes.....she did however have a SAMSUNG "smart" TV and a SAMSUNG phone........she also mention something called a NOW box that would transform an ordinary TV into a smart one :) without having tae buy any apple boxes....oh man I am sooo outta date

  • Google Chromecast will do something similar for £30, just needs a spare HDMI socket on the TV, and your Wi-Fi. Youtube, iPlayer and BT Sport work great but relaying photos and video clips from your iPhone is not as smooth as the Apple TV.

I've held back from buying an Apple TV because there were rumours it was due a major revamp about now - it didn't happen.

The other night I discovered that my daughter's Samsung phone can send photos and video direct to my Panasonic TV, without cables or boxes - and initially, without her being aware that it could. She quickly found out though, as we were trying to watch something on TV at the time! Even more luckily, my daughter had not been taking dodgy pictures of herself…

(And hopefully, this will be a major deterrent to doing so, now that she realises how interconnective all this gadgetry is.)

  • Chromecast is becoming a pain in the arse. They keep de-supporting apps.
Can no longer cast from ipad, unless I used a paid for app, I used to use Twonky beam
as it was free and worked perfectly with my NAS. I could start the movie, then switch
off the ipad and it would keep on playing.

Raspberry Pi stuck to the back of the TV running XBMC works for that sort of thing, too - mine even sucks its power from the USB service port on the back of the telly. :D

not experienced any of this, I cast BT Sport, Netflix, NowTV from iPhone no probs...

as soon as you have cast you can turn device off/put in standby/use for something else, it only uses your casting device as a remote control..

that said I wouldn't pay £30 for one, got mine for £18 and its okay at that.. spend £30 I would spend a bit more and get a Roku stick.. or Ouya's are pretty cheap now and they are excellent with XBMC installed.

Ebuyer is selling Roku boxes for £30.

They are meant to be quite good.

  • Apple TV is excellent if you only want to use apple devices with it. I use it often for MacBook and iPad video streaming and iphone for audio. For most things you literally just swipe up to Control Centre and press one button

    Yup :)

Though latency might be an issue depending on your setup.
